Ex-Saudi ambassador: Kingdom could have helped U.S. prevent 9/11
Source: CNN
Saudi Arabia could have helped the United States prevent al Qaeda's 2001 attacks on New York and Washington if American officials had consulted Saudi authorities in a "credible" way, the kingdom's former ambassador said in a documentary aired Thursday.
The comments by Prince Bandar bin Sultan are similar to the remarks this week by Saudi King Abdullah that suggested Britain could have prevented the July 2005 train bombings in London if it had heeded warnings from Riyadh.
Speaking to the Arabic satellite network Al-Arabiya on Thursday, Bandar -- now Abdullah's national security adviser -- said Saudi intelligence was "actively following" most of the September 11, 2001, plotters "with precision."
"If U.S. security authorities had engaged their Saudi counterparts in a serious and credible manner, in my opinion, we would have avoided what happened," he said.
Bandar was the Saudi ambassador to Washington for nearly 22 years before he was replaced in 2005. A knowledgeable U.S. official told CNN that Bandar's comments should be taken "with a grain of salt."

Family sues government over Iraq veteran's suicide
David Edwards and Muriel KanePublished:
Friday November 2, 2007
A recent study by the Veterans Affairs Department showed that since 2001, 430 combat veterans have committed suicide either while serving in Afghanistan or Iraq or after leaving the service. Others died after returning from combat but while still in uniform.
One of those veterans was Marine Lance
Family sues government over Iraq veteran's suicide
Corporal Jeffrey Lucey, who died by his own hand in June 2004. His parents, Kevin and Joyce Lucey, are now suing both the government and the former Secretary of Veterans Affairs over their son's death. The Luceys are members of an anti-war group, Military Families Speak Out, and hope their lawsuit will help force an overhaul of the VA system.
Jeffrey Lucey returned from Iraq in 2003, profoundly depressed and drinking heavily to handle the pain. Lucey's sister Debbie told CNN, "He looked at me and, as he took two dog tags off of his neck and tossed them at me, and said, 'Don't you understand, your brother's a murderer.'"

His Name Was Wellstone

If we don't fight hard enough for the things we stand for, at some point we have to recognize that we don't really stand for them.

- Paul Wellstone
Five years ago, Senator Paul Wellstone (D-Minnesota) died when his plane went down in the woods of northern Minnesota. The crash also took the lives of his wife Sheila, his daughter Marcia, campaign staffers Will McLaughlin, Tom Lapic and Mary McEvoy, along with pilots Michael Guess and Richard Conry.
This grim remembrance is a marker for the Democratic majority in Congress, a moment for unblinking self-assessment, a chance to compare and contrast the vast gulf between who Wellstone was in life and what his party has become since his death.

There needs to be accountability
The REAL Rudy: Radios

NYC Councilman Eric Gioia:
"My promise is I'll do everything I can to get answers."

With the councilman's support, we can hold Giuliani accountable for his failure to equip firefighters with radios that could have saved lives on 9/11, and get answers to these questions:

Why was nothing done to improve FDNY radio performance for seven years after a clear need was demonstrated in the 1993 World Trade Center attack?
When new radios were finally ordered, why did the city award a contract to Motorola without a competitive bidding process?
Once Motorola was given the contract, why did its cost jump from $1.4 million to $14 million?
Why were these new radios never field tested?
No, this is not the answer to the distortions of Rudy Giuliani's campaign and administration. This is just the beginning.
But it is a helluva start!

One-Day Iraq Toll Is Highest for U.S. In Many Months
By Ellen Knickmeyer
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, October 19, 2006; Page A01
BAGHDAD, Oct. 18 -- A roadside bombing and other attacks killed 10 American troops across Iraq on Tuesday, the U.S. military reported Wednesday, making it the deadliest day of combat for U.S. forces in 10 months.
The one-day toll, part of what the U.S. military has said is a 43 percent increase in attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces in the capital since midsummer, occurred as casualties among Iraqi troops and civilians are soaring far higher than at any previous time in the war, according to U.S. and Iraqi tallies.

US army contracting alarms panel
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have stretched US armed forces
An independent panel has strongly criticised the way the US army manages contracts to supply its troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The panel said there were high levels of fraud and waste in relation to contracts worth $4bn (£1.9bn) a year.
It blamed a lack of oversight and said only about half the army's contracting staff were properly qualified.
Defence Secretary Robert Gates said he was "dismayed" by the report and the Pentagon would pursue its suggestions.
The army says it is pursuing 83 criminal inquiries related to contract fraud and more than $15m in bribes have been exposed.
The panel did not address specific allegations against individuals, but made clear that a lack of oversight and too few army contracting personnel had exacerbated systemic problems.

Sadly, I do think W would have won fair and square when all was said and done. He did NOT have to cheat in Ohio and Florida. I know I am in the minority here when I say that, but I am still well convinced.

Kerry ran a great campaign and was a great candidate. The nation was just too brain-dead to accept him.

Chuck,

Healthcare insurance reform is actually something I've had pretty good luck in promoting and getting people involved in the battle. Even people who aren't political care about this subject. And for those who really think they don't like Democrats or "socialized medicine" they almost always end up being able to understand the crisis and accept the idea of national healthcare insurance.

Friends and I are always trying to plan good 'rebuttals'. I'm pretty good at helping out and at helping people get connected to the people in charge over there. But it's been one step at a time.

Sparrow

The trouble is that so many people still think they have the best healthcare system on earth (after all, "only" 15% are uninsured), and don't realize how broken our system is.

They see any attempts to tamper/nationalize our system as an assault on their wellbeing.

I get this from my fellow businesspeople, virtually all of whom are Republicans due to the California Democrats' strong anti-business record.

Kangaroo

Rudy needs to taste his own medicine, when he goes out cross-dressed onto the streets of NYC, and gets assaulted by one of his Jamaican puppets.

And Motorola is one helluva hideous company, right up there with Samsung. Get Nokia, Sony Ericsson, or even LG.

Wow Ally. I do see it exactly the opposite.

There is no way in hell georgie could have won it fair and square. And yes, he had too, and did cheat in Florida and Ohio, and both times swung the nation with election fraud.

Kerry was a very capable, maybe overly qualified, candidate, but he had some serious weaknesses and made some major stumbles.

For 1. When you are completely surrounded, outnumbered and know you are taking an ass whipping, take the damn gloves off and put that politically correct politeness in the grave where it belongs and use the truth to stomp them like you ain't got nothing to lose but the presidency.

Interestingly enough though, this disease of playing political nice and proper with WAR CRIMINALS is not just a disease Kerry suffered from, but has infected the entire body politic long before Kerry made his bid.

But it sure would have been nice to watch Kerry throw off those chains and just open up a can of whip ass on georgie boy. If he has the courage to kill 'our' enemies himself, I know he had the courage to smack georgie around but he was seeking 'the high road'.

When a killer has his hands around your throat is not the time to worry about decorum.

#2, The press blackout was never effectively countered. I know they played unfair with yall, but that is the time to use the bully pulpit, which as I said in #1 Kerry refrained from doing.

And #3. No one forced Kerry to clip his words. Like it or not, we live in a soundbite world, and Kerry SOUNDS like he has been writing the i's and t's of legislation for 20 years.

Listening to him it is obvious that he is extremly bright, but only to those of us smart enough to understand the difference between listening to someone smart as oppossed to someone dumb.

I am not saying he should have been dumbed down, I am saying his speech should have been clipped, use fewer, but stronger words, to get double the impact. Go back to basic wording, then even the common man understands perfectly. No DC translator device needed.

It also helps that fewer words are more likely to make it into a 'news' clip where 'news' consists of a soundbite lasting no more than 10 seconds.

The press handed Kerry his head on a platter and he seemed to really have no clue what to do about it.

All he really needed was a poet.

@@@@@@@

I disagree - Kerry was leading in the exit polls (i.e. with voters on election day) in both Ohio and Florida. By winning both these key battleground states with lots of electoral votes, Kerry would have, rather easily, won the electoral college and probably the popular vote as well.

It is highly likely that both 2000 and 2004 were stolen. How about 2008???

The typical one is "private sector is doing its job well, and government bureaucrats will mangle it"

"Leave well enough alone."

Others fear lower quality for higher costs under government bureaucracy. But that's what the private sector has been doing well already.

Christy

Re: the poetry book idea - I am a horrible poet, but I may try for that idea of yours.

Christy and Ralpheh

Re: W winning the 2004 election - yes, Ohio and Florida were rigged, but that doesn't account for W's 3 million vote edge.

Kerry had an edge in early counts because the first states to start counting were the Northeast, where he was strong. Then we started counting the Midwest and the South, where W overwhelmed Kerry. Not even California could bring the count back in Kerry's favor - and I am even doubtful that Kerry even carried California decisively, given that the whole state outside the Bay Area was overwhelmingly pro-W.

The UK's NHS is not run particularly well, and that's another example my Republican colleagues will point to.

Good grief sparrow. This sounds like a nightmare in logistics and an utter waste of money, time and other resources. If anyone is to benefit it sure won't be the patient, I'll bet. Whilst ever insurance companies are involved there will be far more expense than necessary. Insurance companies and real estate agents aren't noted for their compassion or generosity.

We have a 2 layered system. A tax levy is paid by tax payers every year to the medicare fund. Those who don't want to rub shoulders with the rest of us and can afford to have private rooms and ensuites and whatever else their little hearts desire, can take out private insurance to cover it all.

They still have to pay the tax levy - so that isn't of any benefit. Like private schooling - you want it - you pay for it. Although 10 years of Howard listening to Dubya has thrown all health and education into a quagmire here too. Hopefully it can be restored before too long.

Thanks you guys. Yall are the best.

I jumped out of bed this morning and ran out here to the shop just too look at her. I may just go buy some champaign today and spend the whole day looking at her in celebration.

I told ya, I figured out Alphonse Muchas brushstroke. Not even mimicing Van Gough made me feel like this! Top of the world!

Although I do admit I have been studying two of Muchas best lithographs for almost a decade now, so it is about bloody time... But I DID IT! FINALLY!

Looking at her just makes me feel greedy. Everything I ever wanted to paint, is about to get painted.

I never understood why other artists always turned Nefertiti into some kind of retro cartoon figure. They have arguably the most perfect stutue ever created as a perfect template of her perfect face, yet they turn her into Betty Boop with a wierd crown.

I swear as I painted her, I could almost feel the warmth of her skin under my hand.

The only other statue that could have rivaled hers was 'Winged Victory', but we will never know since it was decapitated. Not even Venus could have topped Nefertiti.

And no Rossi, not my face behind the mask. I no longer use myself as art, still paying a price for the last time I did.

Blog ho'ing? ha ha ha. You're so funny! Why would anyone think the Silence Majority would be a blog-ho? You frequently bring our stuff there and visa-versa. You also have great photos and your writing is exemplary. And you also have many friends here.

Blog ho'ing (as someone explained to me long ago) is just plopping down links without visiting and being friends with the people here. I remember long ago, someone told Dr. Ron and K-goddess to stop blog-ho'ing here.

Besides, overall, I hate the phrase "blog ho" and even the one "pimping a diary" because they are both very much derogatory towards women.

Thanks Sparrow, Christy
You are both right, in fact. It's kind of nice to have the "Home" page with the main thread header because people new to the blog will see that first and it is a good introduction and timely. I always make a point to see it, as it is very focussing & thought-provoking. I don't think we need a million comments r/t it to have it be so.

As for the "Open" page, it reminds me of the best things that happened on the candidate blog many of us were involved with, where it became communal and fun. It was often a balance between the repository of depressing world events we all made each other aware of, and the things we used (& still use) to cope, such as recipes, music lyrics and now (thanks to the expertise of Dwahzon) photos and videos.

I guess some words like "pimp" and "ho" are starting to be used more ironically, so that they could refer to both genders, but they do have their start in sexist reality & it's not obvious always about the irony. It's a sad thing. I assume alot of people realize that, but it's not maybe a safe assumption. I went through the whole feminist linguistic thing in the '70s, and for Christy, I think the sexual freedom of the '60s is partly a myth but I still think the closet cases in government are trying to make up for lost time.

Christy said:

I mean, we might as well have some fun in this conversation. The world is melting and we are all going to die anyways, so we may as well just say whatever.

Our political situation is barely even describable with words anymore.

Christy,

The degrading part is just in the use of the words 'ho' or 'pimp'. It's sort of like calling someone a "b***h" isn't reflective on the male persona, but is reflective on the person's mother. It's the whole language that has negative connotations.

I know there are people who think if you repeat the phrase yourself then you take away the sting and can make it take your own meaning. I'm not sure I agree with that philosophy.

Darn right

The place where reclaiming the slang or derogatory words breaks down is because there is still the history of the old meaning, and all the people who don't "get" the deconstruction and irony. It may work within one peer group but not universally.

Christy
About the sexual freedom of the 60s - I guess what was different was that it was kind of a new idea, like expanding consciousness or exploring the inner realms. It just wasn't done in polite society and might be pretty damn subversive to the social order! I think it's all stiill going on and it's all still controversial (& the form morphs with time) but just not so new. In the early 60s it was civil rights, in the later 60s the war protests and hippie movement, in the early 70s feminism and environmentalism, in the late 70s the punk/anarchy thing, then the "me" generation, then Gen X and Gen Y and all the stuff with technology (MTV, cell phones, iPods, internet, YouTube, MySpace & the lot).

I think there are always those who fear change and especially any change with potential for people to either question authority and/or utilize free will and rational thought.

Rumsfeld Urged Staff to Exaggerate Terror Threat

The Washington Post's Robin Wright reports: "In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Man falsely links son-in-law to al-Qaida
32 minutes ago
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A Swedish man accused of falsely telling U.S. authorities that his son-in-law had links to al-Qaida has been charged with defamation, a newspaper reported Friday.
The false warning spoiled a business trip to the U.S. for the man's son-in-law, who was stopped at a Florida airport and questioned for 11 hours before being sent back on a plane to Sweden, the Sydsvenska Dagbladet daily reported.
U.S. authorities apparently reacted to an e-mail sent to the FBI saying the man "likely has links to the Muslim terror organization al-Qaida's network in Sweden," the newspaper reported.
The 52-year-old father-in-law admitted to having sent the e-mail after it was traced to his home computer, the paper said. He reportedly told police he sent the e-mail in anger after a dispute with his son-in-law, who was divorcing his daughter.

nmp - thanks for putting up Christy's art and her life philosophies and expectations for a future. It is a remarkable account and I've sent it off to relatives I know will appreciate her. My sister came down from Queensland to support me through the surgery last week and Christy's painting was here at home as I hadn't had a chance to go to the framer with it.

Christy - Cleopatra is truly beautiful. Everything I've seen of yours is so incredibly different from everything else. I too, love the Monkey Ball posters. Being around to witness - and receive these amazing works is such a bonus to meeting and chatting here.

The Open Thread is a great feature of this blog, I think. If we only ever concentrate on the bad of life, it will be too hard to climb out. And Christy, you said it - art is the truth - down through the ages, embedded in the cultures. Art, music, dance. These are certainly the mainstays of our lives.

And for my painting titled A Beautiful Mystery, I needed the woman to have a name. Her eyes are on me at all times, and she's becoming such a friend and companion. I have called her Leyla which is an Iraqi name meaning Dark haired beauty; Night. I hope that's ok with you, Christy.

Christy said:

Leyla. Wow. That is beautiful. It's perfect!

"Her eyes are on me at all times," HAHA! I swear I turned that canvas to every angle I could think of, even upside down, and it doesn't matter how you look at her, there is no escaping that stare. It doesn't matter how far from her you are. I love that canvas.

I am thinking of holding a fake auction for the Nefertiti. Just to get an idea of what my work is worth on the the real market. I have sold some nice pieces before, but the price was always set before I painted anything. I am not displaying those works because they were commissioned portraits of peoples family members, some of them passed away.

I have no idea what these pieces I am doing now are actually worth, but I have enjoyed every moment of it.

Florida politician caught soliciting gay sex in mall restroom

I can not think of a grosser place to get freaky than a public restroom.

God that is sick.

It really is true isn't it? That the ones screaming the loudest against gays are usually worried we will find out they are gay...?

Just think how much easier these peoples lives would be if they were not hypocrits. It is not even being gay that is the problem, the fact they are the biggest liars on earth is the problem.

'Just because I got busted soliciting gay sex does not make me gay!'

What the hell ever.

One comment about art & painters - I have a friend who was in graphic design for years and only recently started to paint as a full-time gig.
She is finding that the galleries are snobbish and look for the Masters of Fine Arts & strong resume of lots of shows & lots of connections. She turned to coffeehouses and is doing well that way, to start getting more exposure and a "track record." http://www.livingstonotey.com/Paula_gallery.html

I would think you could sell over the internet too, & alot of those sort of "rules" wouldn't matter. You could also have a real auction of a painting on eBay or something and start with a fairly high price, see what happens.

Christy said:

NMP that is a good idea with the coffee shops and stuff. We have a lot of 'Trade Days' type of events locally too, so I think I could do well there too and online.

It is wierd cause as an artist my stuff always goes out so fast, even the stuff I just paint for practice, someone usually wants it before it gets off the easel, so really the reason I don't have an extensive collection to start off with is because of that. Most other artists I know always have a lot of their own stuff amassed. I only collect my mistakes really. I have lots of canvasses that were started and went wrong. The rest are grabbed up as soon as I'm done.

Yeah it don't surprise me the art world is snobbish. So is the literary world. That is why I challenged others in here to write a book detailing the politics of poetry, cause last time I tried writing a book the damn thing got me blacklisted. I prefer painting anyway.

And it doesn't matter if the art world is snobbish because the only thing I need to say is said on canvas and I don't care if they reject it or not because as I said, in just my personal life my work is already sought after.

I was thinking of taking commissions online, but seriously that would tie me up with so many other peoples images I would barely have time to paint what I want to.

Yup. phelps is totally gay. What a sad little man.
