Political Posters

Watching Christy nurturing her art and seeing Dianne's beautiful photographs reminded me of some of the great political poster art that's become a mainstay of our history.

Pictures like these from WWII:

Uncle Sam.jpg

These pictures were designed to evoke a response in us--a patriotic response. And interesting enough, when I went searching for these posters, I discovered that one of the key words to use in the search was 'propaganda.'

So I went in search of current propaganda and artwork.

I picked a few to share with you on this evening's Open Thread. I'll let you guess if it's from 'the liberal left' or the "neoconservative right'.

So what's on your mind this evening?

This is a great thread... could get pretty long to load though with all the graphics!

The old authentic posters from WWII remind me once again of the shared sacrifice Americans made, and willingly, to contribute to a war effort they believe in.

The world was with us on September 12th, but asolutely NOTHING has been asked of the American public, and ZERO leadership has been demonstrated in any coherent manner to get Americans behind this effort, especially since virtually two-thirds of the public has been against it for several years now, and the entire world can see through the veil of crap that the Bush administration has paraded in front of our eyes on a daily basis.

But don't go telling that to your elected representatives in Washington, they will get all confused with the facts.

Duped by Stupid... proud are ya?

Yeh. I thought so too Monkey.

Have no fear...if it gets too long, we'll just open another.

I have a few weeks off, so that's lots of time to have lots of pic threads.

Thanks for the compliment and love to come home and see this thread!
I absolutely love this sort of thing!

This poster was from the CA Conservative Republican's website. I put 9-11 poster art in the image search. And it came up. It represents the faces of those who died in 9-11--even though you can't see it well.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a poster but it just appeared on my MySpace site comments.

On the shared sacrifice bit, I've been using the following line lately with my Republican friends, when the opportunity presents itself:

You say the surge is working (I say, to the extent anything is calmer, it is behind the scenes diplomacy with Iran, Syria and Turkey, plus the fact that a lot of ethinc cleansing has already happened, but that is beside the point for now). If you are right, why don't you, my Republican friend, call for a return of the draft? If this occupation is so important, and if more troops are the answer, why don't we get down to it, declare war, reinstate the draft, and take care of business?

PS: I think the NIE represents a behind-the-scenes coup that happened when the Dems got subpeona (sp?) power and Scowcroft and Bush Sr. types said "Rumsfield is out, Gates is in, and take it down a couple notches, Jr."

I count it as poster art.

Also, don't forget to check www.deviantart.com because you'll see lots of budding artists there too. Some who even post political stuff.

It's a good time to remind people why we need an FDR leader--with progressive values and a person who will help our country.

Hey Monkey:

My wife actually went and rented my dad's favorite movie: "Dr. Strangelove." Peace was their USAF SAC profession, don't you know! My dad's job on the B-52 was the James Earl Jones character, I think. Cracked me up when the President's press secretary admitted to not knowing what the Cuban Missile Crisis was. My dad was on full alert for days on that one. He was stationed up at Plattsburg (upstate NY, Lake Champlain) at that time. Or maybe it was Biloxi....

I was 2-3 at the time, but my brothers and sisters (and mom) probably remember it pretty well as I am the youngest of five by five years. I'll have to remember to ask them this holiday season.

This is definitely political art, though not a poster. It's more a brilliant cartoon story, just mindbendingly intelligent and witty.

Hey Ally, I just won our cat fight.

Ohio's Secretary of State announced this morning that a $1.9 million official study shows that "critical security failures" are embedded throughout the voting systems in the state that decided the 2004 election. Those failures, she says, "could impact the integrity of elections in the Buckeye State." They have rendered Ohio's vote counts "vulnerable" to manipulation and theft by "fairly simple techniques."

Indeed, she says, "the tools needed to compromise an accurate vote count could be as simple as tampering with the paper audit trail connector or using a magnet and a personal digital assistant."

In other words, Ohio's top election official has finally confirmed that the 2004 election could have been easily stolen.

Gonzales, Cheney's Lawyer Plotted Over
CIA Torture Tapes

At least four top White House lawyers took part in discussions with the Central Intelligence Agency between 2003 and 2005 about whether to destroy videotapes showing the secret interrogations of two operatives from Al Qaeda, according to current and former administration and intelligence officials.

The accounts indicate that the involvement of White House officials in the discussions before the destruction of the tapes in November 2005 was more extensive than Bush administration officials have acknowledged.

Dems Lose War Funding Showdown: Senate Approves $70B For Iraq, Afghanistan

The Senate voted Tuesday to provide $70 billion for U.S. military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, handing a victory to President Bush and his GOP allies on Capitol Hill.

The 70-25 roll call paved the way for the Senate to pass a $555 billion omnibus appropriations bill combining the war funding with the budgets for 14 Cabinet agencies.

All Iraqi groups blame U.S. invasion for discord
See departure of 'occupying forces' as key to reconciliation, study shows

By Karen DeYoung
washingtonpost.com

BOGOTA, Colombia - Iraqis of all sectarian and ethnic groups believe that the U.S. military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them, and see the departure of "occupying forces" as the key to national reconciliation, according to focus groups conducted for the U.S. military last month.

That is good news, according to a military analysis of the results. At the very least, analysts optimistically concluded, the findings indicate that Iraqis hold some "shared beliefs" that may eventually allow them to surmount the divisions that have led to a civil war.

Conducting the focus groups, in 19 separate sessions organized by outside contractors in five cities, is among the ways in which Multi-National Force-Iraq assesses conditions in the country beyond counting insurgent attacks, casualties and weapons caches. The command, led by Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, devotes more time and resources than any other government or independent entity to measuring various matters, including electricity, satisfaction with trash collection and what Iraqis think it will take for them to get along.

The results are analyzed and presented to Petraeus as part of the daily Battle Update Assessment or BUA (pronounced boo-ah). Some of the news has been unarguably good, including the sharply reduced number of roadside bombings and attacks on civilians. But bad news is often presented with a bright side, such as the focus-group results and a November poll, which found that 25 percent of Baghdad residents were satisfied with their local government and that 15 percent said they had enough fuel for heating and cooking.

The good news? Those numbers were higher than the figures of the previous month (18 percent and 9 percent, respectively).

And Iraqi complaints about matters other than security are seen as progress. Early this year, Maj. Fred Garcia, an MNF-I analyst, said that "a very large percentage of people would answer questions about security by saying 'I don't know.' Now, we get more griping because people feel freer."

Didja catch that? People are bitching more in Iraq now because they feel "freer".

NEW YORK (AP) -- A 710-year-old copy of the declaration of human rights known as the Magna Carta -- the version that became part of English law -- was auctioned Tuesday for $21.3 million, a Sotheby's spokeswoman said.

The document, which had been expected to draw bids of $30 million or higher, was bought by David Rubenstein of The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, the spokeswoman said.

Holy shit, the irony of Carlyle buying the most famous human rights document EVER...

Note: George W. Bush, current U.S. President. Was appointed in 1990 to the Board of Directors of one of Carlyle's first acquisitions, an airline food business called Caterair, which Carlyle eventually sold at a loss. Bush left the board in 1992 to run for Governor of Texas.

These posters are fantastic. I bet Rossi has a whole bunch of the new ones, made to look vintage.

Before my other comp melted, I had propaganda posters from all over, even the ones warning our soldiers about VD. HAHA! Not joking. To me, those were the funniest.

The best war bond one I have seen yet was a WW1 Lady Liberty, standing on a battlefield with one of our wounded soldiers. In one hand she is holding him up, with the other, she is laying his gun down. It is probably hands down one of the best produced.

If I can find it again I will link up.
