Free Fall
Dow plunges 307
Nasdaq plunges 47
Portfolios across the country are freefalling. The chart below represents Merril Lynch which has admitted that it's the worse free-fall in 94 years.
See the slope of the curves going downhill?
Those slopes represent the average American's income, dreams, and retirement savings. We have ten months left until the next election and twelve months left until we get responsible leadership, unless the corporate-owned public servants decide to impeach.
So what should we do when we're being pushed down that hill?

I hope we're not suppose to say, "WHEEEEEEEEE"
I have to say....but I think if the stock holders and the corporations start hurting as much as everyone else, Congress may finally start impeachment hearings.
It's pretty bad when it has to hurt the richest in the land before those CEO's of the big corps will allow impeachment.
White House Says It Routinely Overwrote Email Tapes From 2001 to 2003
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/011708K.shtml
Elizabeth Williamson and Dan Eggen report for The Washington Post: "E-mail messages sent and received by White House personnel during the first three years of the Bush administration were routinely recorded on tapes that were 'recycled,' the White House's chief information officer said in a court filing this week. During the period in question, the Bush presidency faced some of its biggest controversies, including the Iraq war, the leak of former CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson's name and the CIA's destruction of interrogation videotapes."
Bush says, "we need to make mah tax cutsssss permanentsssss, cuz it stimahlatesssss the economy, see?"...
So how EXACTLY have the economic policies and global klusterfunk that the warmongererer affected the economic health of the You Knighted States???

FRONTLINE DOCUMENTARY:
"CHENEY'S LAW"
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/cheney/
Jane Mayer is interview as well as Office of Legal Counsel lawyers, John Yoo and Jack Goldsmith.
Goldsmith was appointed head of the Office of Legal Counsel in the DOJ in 2003(?) after the secret wiretapping program had begun. He was asked to review the program and approve (or disapprove) its continuation. He thought it was unconstitutional and took the matter to 2nd in command at DOJ James Comey. Comey agreed. Then it went to Ashcroft. He agreed as well.
The White House and the Bushies did not want to hear this from the Justice Department. UPshot is, I believe, the White House disregarded DOJ's recommendation and went ahead. There was a mass revolt in the DOJ. Goldsmith resigned as did Comey and several others. Ashcroft leaves DOJ replaced by Al Gonzo....
It's hard to just trust in the fact that things will get better. I just read a local article today which discussed 2007 increases in basics like milk and gas. They were averaging 20% increase and up. I just got my heat bill and there was a comparison with last year. Bad news. Seems we already turn the heat down and put on sweaters, skimp on hot water, etc.
I guess for those with retirement funds there is some consolation in the fact that they aren't taken out all at once. As far as Social Security, we know we "boomers" will depend on far less workers as a pool and cannot depend on Medicare. The lucky ones among us are those with jobs, with mortgages that aren't going up, or that are being paid down. Even so, we are probably putting kids through school (or raising them) and may be part of the "sandwich" generation with vulnerable elderly parents (mine is out of state, as is my mentally ill sister.)
I just wrote about the vulnerable poor and homeless (click on my name) after reading a local blog called "Apema's Lament" (which I reference) but the lower and middle income person is being crunched too. Whether it's a Republican or a Democrat, I can't see what real "economic stimulus" a tax rebate really is, but just another encouragement to save the environment by going out and spending.
We need to learn the lesson of our elders who went through the Depression and learned thrifty ways. Our economy can not go on being subsidized by spending, individual and government, on credit. We are now in debt to countries like China and have to pay it back in shrinking dollars (so it will take longer, if it's even possible to get beyond the interest). Things seem broken beyond repair.
Be strong, hang on - I'm middle-aged but really don't have much advise to give the young except to keep questioning "authority" and thinking for themselves.
Just came back from last night's CodePink function, where there was a media training session from cplaction.org.
One of the participants was mentioning about a daytime activity in the Topanga Canyon area (between Malibu and San Fernando Valley), where she was going to discuss how everyone gets squeezed, except for a few select war profiteers. Specifically, as working class families lose their homes in the subprime mortgage mess, war profiteers are snapping up new homes on the cheap.
My family business can be considered "war profiteers" due to its dealings with the military (in fact, my folks are flying to Alaska right now, to close the deal on a home there). But even for my business, life is not easy - combat spendings overshadow infrastructure improvements, and the military is having trouble coming up with the funds for infrastructure jobs that I can do. And if the military is stretched this thin, one can only imagine how f'd up the civilian agencies are.
Happy Friday to all...

Thank you Mr. Wexler for doing what you were elected to do. standing up for us "frustrated and patriotic Americans." Millions of Americans stand with you in this fight for truth and justice. There are NO arguements against an investigation, it is totally warranted. And as you said the arguements against impeachment or unfounded. Too late? more important issues? there can be no more important an issue than standing up to crimes against Americans, our Country, and our Constitution.

Finally, a courageous man is speaking out and exercising Congressional authority and power to hold a tyrannical President and Vice President who have abused and subverted the democratic Constitution, and turned this great nation into a lawless and rogue power on earth--Americans must hold these high executive officers accountable for lying to the nation and the entire world, endangered peace and security of the whole world, and made America a dangerous power in the world.

Please keep up your excellent, impassioned work calling for investigations and impeachment of Dick Cheney. We agree with Mr. Wexler's support of brave Mr. Kucinich's bi;l H.R. 333 to bring accountability to an administration that has acted criminally and cowardly towards Americans and the world. THE SAGA OF THE MISSING EMAILS CONTINUES:
White House Study Found 473 Days of Email Gone
By Dan Eggen and Elizabeth Williamson
The Washington Post
Friday 18 January 2008
The White House possesses no archived e-mail messages for many of its component offices, including the Executive Office of the President and the Office of the Vice President, for hundreds of days between 2003 and 2005, according to the summary of an internal White House study that was disclosed yesterday by a congressional Democrat.
The 2005 study - whose credibility the White House attacked this week - identified 473 separate days in which no electronic messages were stored for one or more White House offices, said House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.).
Waxman said he decided to release the summary after White House spokesman Tony Fratto said yesterday that there is "no evidence" that any White House e-mails from those years are missing. Fratto's assertion "seems to be an unsubstantiated statement that has no relation to the facts they have shared with us," Waxman said.
The competing claims were the latest salvos in an escalating dispute over whether the Bush administration has complied with long-standing statutory requirements to preserve official White House records - including those reflecting potentially sensitive policy discussions - for history and in case of any future legal demands.
Waxman said he is seeking testimony on the issue at a hearing next month from White House counsel Fred F. Fielding, National Archivist Allen Weinstein and Alan R. Swendiman, the politically appointed director of the Office of Administration, which produced the 2005 study at issue.

for what it is worth, Sen. Leahy endorses Obama:
Leahy Endorses Obama
By Jeff Zeleny
The New York Times
Thursday 17 January 2008
San Francisco - As he campaigned in California today, Senator Barack Obama collected the long-distance endorsement of a colleague in Washington, adding another senator to the list of those backing his candidacy.
Senator Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, said he was supporting Mr. Obama because he believed he could best restore the image of the United States around the globe.
"Many around the world have lost respect for America and the hope that America once gave them. That's a tragedy," Mr. Leahy said. "We need a president who can reintroduce America to the world and reintroduce America to ourselves."
Since the New Hampshire primary last week, the Obama campaign has spent significant time rolling out a series of endorsements, particularly from his colleagues in the Senate. Mr. Leahy became the seventh senator to endorse Mr. Obama, compared with nine senators who have announced their support for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Supreme Court denies Kucinich ballot bid (Texas)
Source: AP
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Friday allowed Texas to print presidential primary ballots without Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich's name.
The court refused to step into a dispute between Kucinich and the Texas Democratic Party over a loyalty oath all candidates must sign to make the ballot.
Kucinich and singer-supporter Willie Nelson objected to the party oath that a presidential candidate must "fully support" the party's eventual nominee. Kucinich crossed out the oath when he filed for a spot on the primary ballot.
A federal judge in Austin ruled against Kucinich last week. U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel ruled the state party has the right to require the oath. Kucinich and Nelson argued it violated Kucinich's First Amendment right to free speech.

HUCKABEE AND THE CONFEDERATE FLAG??:
Quiet blog.
Good posts. I'm still thinking about the Kucinich in Texas one. It boils down to a loyalty oath. Weird.
I would have thought it would be in DK's best interest to sign it. Afterall, won't he eventually vote for the nominee?
I've been swamped at work so haven't posted much and I'll be gone to Portland for the weekend (anniversary). I'll try to check in. It's a morale boost to come here whether it's in a busy or slow period. I mean, the news is depressing, but the thought that goes into posting is much appreciated.

What a shame. He could have been a president with principles. He chose his principles first. Don't we want this in a world leader? A leader whose principles are unbreakable? We wouldn't have a constitutional dismantling under such a leader. We'd never, ever have torture under a leader with such strong principles. We wouldn't go off into foreign lands to create murder and mayhem under such a principled president. With him, you'd know what you'd get.
When will America look beyond the pretty face and the money raised? We'll always get unprincipled leaders while these things are the foremost points to consider.
woz,
Don't idolize DK too much. Yes, he's pro impeachment and pro-singlepayer healthcare. But he's had some 'whoppers' too.
Re Republicans Eat Their Own, see more examples of dirty politics in South Carolina that Kayakbiker put up at http://www.silencedmajority.blogs.com

"We win, they lose, and it would happen with overwhelming force. Ladies and gentlemen, we'll practice the Billy Jack school of foreign policy: This heel, on that side of your face, and there's not a thing you can do about it."
Mike Huckabee, 2008
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever."
George Orwell, 1984
Ok sparrow - I won't idealise him. I only heard of him here at dcp. I'm happy with obama and edwards taking it out.
John Howard is setting off to make his gazillions on the world speaking front about his amazing success at world leadership! *throwup*
George Orwell was born in 1903 and died in 1950, the same year that his book, 1984 was published. This makes the photograph and the quote even more potent, I believe.
We're headed to Portland, to the Kennedy School, which has only 32 rooms, which used to be classrooms so they have chalkboards and everything. There are no televisions and there is no computer access. They make all their own food and ale and have their own movie theater. There is art everywhere and it is all local. We've stayed at other of their properties but not this one.
I put the Huckabee video and boot image up and added quotes by Anne Coulter and Limbaugh about Republicans.
My son had this to say about the ad touting the flying of the Confederate flag in South Carolina:
"What could be more unAmerican than trying to secede from the Union, kill over 600,000 Americans over the issue of slavery - not a very patriotic thing to do, and I think it should be kind of an embarassment for them. Germans don't hang swastikas in court houses."

More links around. But I just posted the handy ones.
I received a rather nasty shock this week, when I discovered in the NY Times that the pharmaceutical that I have been taking the last two years for high cholesterol, Vytorin, had failed miserably in a clinical trial. Vytorin is a drug that combines two different manufacturer's cholesterol medications, Zocar (a statin) and Zetia. It's the Zetia component that is apparently at fault here. What makes this study even more upsetting is that these two companies have apparently been sitting on preliminary reports of these failed clinical trials for nearly two years.
Today, the Times is reporting that as much of 40% of the clinical trials for anti-depressant medications, specifically, those trials that proved unfavorable, also have gone unreported.

Is this any way to safeguard the health of a nation? What in hell is Bush's FDA up to?
No good!
Hilliary, and Romney won Nevada
Romney signs popping up near my home (a hardcore neocon neighborhood).
Ron Paul signs near work.
The Dems are comatose again, being nowhere to be seen.
Ally...
That's cuz the Dems don't have a real candidate, and are counting on anti-Bush backlash sticking to any Republican candidate, which of course, is borderline retarded. THey could screw up anything.
But that's the Dem leadership for ya.
Get Yer Piping Hot Cynical Rolls
monkey - my fear - you could be right :(
omg Sparrow I think I was saying back a few weeks ago about how the stock market was way overbought, people were plumping up their year-end portfolios to avoid disaster and we were due for a major correction. We have a ways to fall.
And don't kid yourself about CEO's...they all escaped with platinum parachutes right as they got fired. Stockholders won't get as pissed as you think - most large American stockholders (individuals or corporations) are invested overseas to lessen their exposure and capitalize on emerging markets. However, there are a lot of foreign investors invested here for a safe rate of return. So when the Fed continues to lose its clout and it becomes patently obvious that there is no possible way the US can get a grip on its national debt...yeah. Not good.
On the upside, I attended my first-ever "in person" political organizing meeting the other day. I'm registered to vote some 2000 miles from here (my home of record, where Dianne, the Kennedy School is only the tip of Portland's iceberg of "uber-hip" offerings...when I lived there they were just "quirky")...but I want to do what I can in a red red red state. It was a fascinating meeting, even if we were told that we were rather unimportant and no money or staffers were being sent to us. Tomorrow I hope to give phone banking a try...
And nobody in the Dem campaign seems to realize that we vote here on Jan. 30th vice Feb. 5th, because of all things, of Mardi Gras. They don't celebrate MLK day here, we have to work, but we get both Lundi Gras & Mardi Gras off. Crazy!!!
Romney:
Mitt looks and sounds as inept as his father - George "I was brainwashed about Vietnam" Romney. George Romney ran American Motors for some period of time. AMC went out of busy rather quickly - before Chrysler went belly up in the early 1980's.
Romney basically BSed his way through Michigan. The barely literate voters of Michigan grunted as they went to the polls.
"Hum Romney... I know that name... wasn't there a Romney that was elected to something a long time ago? Yeah... I'm votin' Romney. McCain is a damn liberal anyway."
Democrats:
"Is the primary today? I think so. Wow, nobody on the ballot.. 'Clinton'... well I liked Bill.. yeah... I'm votin' Clinton."
DEMOCRACY!!!!!! IN MICHIGAN!!!!
Romney's edge in Michigan:
He is the only Republican (or Democrat) candidate whose parents are both buried in Michigan.
Over at DKOS:
Obama will get 1 more delegate than Clinton from Nevada even though Clinton won the popular vote (I don't know if I like this "arcane" system of proportionment of delegates)
quote:
04:07:32 PM PST
So check it out, Obama literally won more delegates in Nevada than Clinton:
A source with knowledge of the Nevada Democratic Party's projections told The Nation that under the arcane weighting system, Obama would win 13 national convention delegates and Clinton would win 12 delegates. The state party has not released an official count yet.
Barack Obama released an official statement celebrating a delegate victory. "We came from over twenty-five points behind to win more national convention delegates than Hillary Clinton because we performed well all across the state, including rural areas where Democrats have traditionally struggled," he said.
And the Obama campaign is milking it, throwing the Hillary campaign's own words against it:
The Clinton Machine using heavy handed tactics in Nevada:
UPDATED (2): Widespread Cheating & Vote Suppression by Clinton Campaign in Clark County, NV Hotlist
by thereisnospoon [Subscribe]
UPDATE: I'm not claiming that these tactics were enough to flip the results. In fact, I don't think so. Hillary probably won more actual Nevada voters anyway, and would have won them without the cheating (though Obama won more delegates, which is what matters). The point is to illustrate the nature of her campaign; how it reflects on her character; and how it affects the Democratic base.
Also, word on the ground is that caucuses on the Strip and in Reno were clean.
For all you doubters out there, all I can do is tell you what I directly experienced, and heard firsthand from other volunteers at the campaign office. As further corroboration, the Obama hotline to report irregularities was busy for a full ten minutes.
Here's a hypothetical rearview mirror thought to ponder...
What do you think America (and the world) would look like today, January 19th, 2008, if George W. Bush had LOST the election in 2004?
V--You need to read this article. (Everyone can, but I know that business and numbers are V's thing.)
Monkey,
He did lose in o4. He just cheated better so it looked like he won.
But as far as what it would look like if they weren't a bunch of 8*(*(*&( cheaters..
Kerry would have stopped the Iraq occupation and used common sense and competent approaches to end it. No 'surge'.
The world would 'be our friend'.
We'd never see the corrupt bills that the 109th congress put through.
We'd have started working on progressive legislation.
We'd never have a corrupt 110th congress who refuses to impeach a Bushie.
Everyone, there is talk about Obama winning NV and not Hillary.
I'll try to find the links.
OH..and Paul took second. Ha ha ha. So the Republican party now has 4 candidates. Let them use up all their time and money in the primary duking it out.
V- Your story about the campaign there is just exactly like what April experienced in the 04 election in N.C.
Good for you for participating though.
Delegates in NV--an insider's take.
Delegates absolutely were selected today. I filled out the paperwork for them. They go forward from here to the county conventions and then on to the state conventions. In order for Hillary to get the most national delegates out of nevada. Obama delegates will have to switch to her. That may or may not happen but as of right now Hillary lost the delegate race in Nevada.
monkey asked
I think the world would look more peaceful. It wouldn't really take much for the world to look more peaceful than it is right now. There's hardly a corner on the planet that is looking peaceful and content. Cheating in elections? Perhaps that would have stopped, but I'm doubtful.
Would the Israelis be bombing the shit out of the Palestinians in closed off Gaza?
Perhaps it would have looked as though peace is a possibility.
oh god! Just when I think I have a vague understanding of this American presidential voting system, up comes another confusion where the winner is actually the loser and the loser has actually won. Ok - I don't want explanations. I no longer want the lessons. I don't want to learn the whys and the hows. All I want is - who won? No ifs and buts. Just a name. Nothing more than a name.
Is that possible?
Fairfax media in Australia is up to its eyeballs in federal government manipulation by setting the stage for the former ALP leader to be Australia's next (and last, hopefully) Governor General. Our PM Rudd is having none of it! Rudd is the man who toppled the former leader and went on to seize the top job. Perhaps you could encourage your politicians to recognise media manipulation and dump on it.
HILLARY AND THE TEACHER'S UNION PULLING LAST MINUTE TRUCKS IN NEVADA:
from a post at DKOS
SOUR GRAPES FROM CLINTON CAMP
Perhaps we shouldn't have unions involved in caucuses. If so, that's a valid point to bring up sometime BEFORE the caucus. Or maybe we shouldn't allow unions to make endorsements.
Last year, when Hillary Clinton and most of the Democratic establishment were laying out the calendar and putting the pieces on the board for this campaign, they thought it was just fine and dandy to have Nevada be the third primary so that the unions could have a bigger say. I guess they never dreamed that the union might endorse somebody other than the "experienced" one.
So now we have all this sour grapes stuff. We have imaginary and exaggerated claims of union malfeasance (more on that later), and claims of unfairness in the caucus site arrangement which was made MONTHS AGO. We have lawsuits by the Clintons to close down caucus sites on the Strip just days before the actual vote, days after all the voter information pamphlets had already been sent out. The net result, of course, would have been thousands of Strip workers not voting at all.
I guess it benefits somebody, no matter how you do it, eh? Too bad it didn't benefit Hillary.
NOT "TRUCKS", I MEANT "TRICKS" ABOVE ^
Ralph, I thought maybe you were talking about the Clinton camp busing in voters from out of state or something!!
Here's a hypothetical rearview mirror thought to ponder...
What do you think America (and the world) would look like today, January 19th, 2008, if George W. Bush had LOST the election in 2004?
Not 2004 Monkey, if the Supreme Court had not handed him the 2000 Presidency of a platter, he would not have been there for the 2004 election, and I think the world would be looking pretty bloody good today.
Is our stock market crashing? Cause it looks like it is crashing.
Great pics Monkey! Except the ones where the blow up doll is being violated.
BTW, georgie DID lose in 2004, and the world still looks like this.
Why torture yourselves...?
Look what I found. An explanation for why our economy is tanking so hard. If poor people did this, it would be called 'looting'.
http://www.democracynow.org/2008/1/18/free_lunch_how_the_wealthiest_americans
Oh, and georgie himself has made millions.
Maybe we should have been talking about that all along.
Follow the money!
Hey Christy...
I called what is happening with the economy "pillaging", but meant the same as looting.
Bush and friends are gonna take the money and RUN over the next 12 months, just as they have over the last 7 years.
Imagine, 2 oil men (s)elected to be POTUS and SCROTUS, supposedly with the "knowledge" to manage something as important as our energy addiction, and POOF!, the oil companies go on to make the most geyenormous corporate profits in the history of our country, while orinary citizens bend over and take it at the pump, all while Cheney has secret energy task force meetings that have done absolutely NOTHING to assist the aforementioned bent over citizens, but have surely helped line the pockets of those who are closely associated with the 2 OIL MEN who were (S)ELECTED in the first place!
(exhale)
Oh, did I mention the part where the 2 OIL MEN go on to start a thouroughly unnecessary WAR in a country that is rich in OIL, essentially LOOTING it of it's own natural resource, and nobody seems to know for sure where all that OIL is going, except to say that it is NOT going to the aformentioned bentovers or doing anything to alleviate the supply or price issues?
Just what did that Cheney Energy Task Force come up with, anyway?
Follow The Monkey
I know where all that oil is going.
Russian and Chinese black market.
BTW Sparrow, it is freaking freezing here.
But atleast it is no longer sleeting.
Yeah, snowed most of afternoon and evening yesterday here in Raleigh, and it's like 18 degrees this morning, just took a super-frigid walk, froze mitosis off!
