Iowa Caucus, Thursday Evening Open Thread

I'm rescuing those on dial-up from the sluggishness the videos cause on the other thread. So you've now got a nice quick thread on which to post your thoughts about tonight's caucuses.

No matter who you're routing for, remember this statement posted by Army Dude from ArmyofDude.blog

Remember Iraq? The Democratic candidates don't, but the Republican candidates do, as the word 'success' is being tossed around D.C. like it's been there since mission accomplished. I suppose the only thing both sides have in common is using the war and our soldiers as a Kleenex issue, ready to dispose of when they're no longer useful.

What you likely have forgotten is Afghanistan, slipping deeper into chaos with a Taliban resurgence, coupled with what is going to a be record crop of opium, used to finance insurgent fighters. Per capita, it's more deadly than Iraq, with only 50,000 troops there to hold against the Taliban influx. A war almost the whole world can agree on, and there's a little being done, save Secretary Gates asking allies to contribute. Be sure to read this article on what happens when there are too few troops in an area crawling with Taliban. Policy that directs assets and soldiers to Iraq to fight in that war is what gets men killed in Afghanistan, simply put. They don't have enough manpower and equipment to fight their fight. With the supposed success in Iraq, it's high time we have another surge, this time in Afghanistan.

This has been on my mind all new year. It was left anonymously in a comment section of an earlier entry:

Sometime this year, an eighteen year old soldier will die in a war that started when he was thirteen.

Hold onto that. Let it linger.

Sometime this year, an eighteen year old soldier will die in a war that started when he was thirteen.

Sometime this year an eighteen year old will die after having lived through a political impeachment based on marital infidelity and a lie that happened when he was nine.

Some time this year, an eighteen year old soldier will die for a president who lied...

And yet Congress just sits by...

It's an election year, and many more will die.

Think on that a while.

Expert: Crime of torture could only have been ordered by the president
The Raw Story
1/3/08

It was announced on Wednesday that the Justice Department has opened an official criminal investigation into the destruction of CIA torture tapes. However, rather than appointing an outside special council, Attorney General Mukasey has assigned an assistant US Attorney from Connecticut to handle the proceedings.

At the same time, the chairman and co-chair of the 9/11 Commission are charging in a New York Times op-ed that the CIA obstructed their own investigations in 2003-04 by not disclosing the existence of the tapes.

Constitutional expert Jonathan Turley told Keith Olbermann that as many as six criminal offenses could be involved in the 9/11 Commission charge alone, including obstruction of Congress, obstruction of justice, perjury, and conspiracy.

However, Turley emphasized that the real crime under investigation is not merely obstruction, but the actual torture documented by the tapes. "It is still, even after the last seven year, a crime to torture suspects," Turley commented.

Turley suggested that under those circumstances, the failure to appoint a special prosecutor was a serious problem, because "the investigation will essentially be the Justice Department investigating itself. ... Picking some guy in Connecticut or Cincinnati or Delaware or any other state doesn't make any difference. His boss is Michael Mukasey. And Michael Mukasey's boss is the president of the United States. If torture occurred, he was the guy who ordered it."

Huckabee Attack Ad Runs Anyway
His attack ad appears on three Iowa stations. We find it somewhat misleading. Another ad makes misleading claims about tax cuts.

By Brooks Jackson | factcheck.org
Jan 3, 2008

The ad Huckabee said he decided not to run has now appeared at least three times in Iowa anyway. It accuses Romney of being "dishonest" but shades the facts in the process.

In another ad Huckabee claims to have signed the most broad-based tax cut in Arkansas history. But as we've noted repeatedly, he signed bigger tax increases than cuts.

Analysis
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee raised eyebrows Dec. 31 when he told reporters at a news conference that he had decided not to run an attack ad calling rival Mitt Romney "dishonest," then ran it in front of reporters and TV cameras anyway. Now it turns out that the ad actually appeared on at least three Iowa TV stations that same day.

Actually... I'm not really going to be happy with any Republican candidate, but the ads against the Huckster and McCain should be quite good!

(But I actually am happy if McCain doesn't get it since the media ALWAYS gives him a pass on his lies! AND he took the most money from the rich dudes who sponsored the swifties in 04.

The most notable recipient of Swift Boat largesse is John McCain, erstwhile front-runner and Stand Up Guy. When the Swift Boat ads were first unleashed, McCain was alone among his Republican colleagues to condemn them. A fellow Vietnam veteran, a good friend of Kerry's and a former target of smears about his own service, McCain called the ads "dishonest and dishonorable," a "cheap stunt," and he urged Bush to condemn them. But in pursuit of the GOP nomination, McCain ditched the mantle of maverick for that of hack, and his once-floundering, possibly rejuvenated campaign has been aided along the way by $61,650 from Swift Boat donors and their associates. "There is such a thing as dirty money," said Senator Kerry in a statement, after The Nation informed him of McCain's FEC records. "I'm surprised that the John McCain I knew who was smeared in 2000 and thought so-called Swift Boating was wrong in 2004 would feel comfortable taking their money after seeing the way it was used to hurt the veterans I know he loves." (McCain's office did not return calls for comment.)

BTW:

I called Rep. Wexler's Washington office today about impeachment and getting a copy of his You Tube video to broadcast on local cable access. The person was not particularly helpful; she said the Washington office doesn't have anything to do with the petition and gave me an alternative phone number that really didn't work. I called the office back and said the phone number they gave me was bad. She said to me "that was the number, I was told to give out". I told her "Tell the person who told you to give the phone number out, that it doesn't work!!!"

Then I try Wexler's Florida office. I ask them about the petition. They immediately transfer my call back to the Washington office. LOL (I am getting the classic run-around). I tell the woman in D.C. to give a phone number that works. She says to email "the guy" about the petition...

I was going to chip in some money to Wexler's campaign but now I don't know. I don't know if they are serious about the petition...

I was the wife of a soldier once. Ammo Sgt. (IYAAYAS)

I heard Osama try to blow him up. I saw him on TV later that night, searching for his roomate in the rubble of what had been their room. Yes, it is a brotherhood.

I understand how much you like Clarke, I like him too. But he is a military man. We do not need a military leader.

Love General Wesley Clark - he is a brilliant man. Saw him speak at YearlyKos in Las Vegas and Chicago. The first time he spoke about the importance of science. Saw him in Tacoma with John Kerry in 2004. His endorsement of HIllary Clinton was one of the plusses for her in my mind. I am a middle-aged woman, so a middle-aged woman would be nice for President.

But then I agreed more with the policies of Edwards fundamentally, as far as his positions on trade, as this country has deregulated itself into a position where the poor and middle classes are literally subsidizing the rich. For example, when we pay sales tax at a "big box" store, a government program uses them to subsidize the store's operating expenses rather than going for our public infrastructure. It's all in a book called "Free Lunch" (by a New York Times investigative reporter, so don't throw the baby out with the bathwater).

My son is ecstatic about Obama. He has supported him from the start and my son is the one who convinced me to support Kerry when Gore didn't run. If Gore had run this time, my son would have backed him 1000%. If Obama has a way to get the young out to caucus, work and vote then he may be electable. Maybe my generation needs to pass the torch. If Obama can prove electability, I will be out there recruiting young people to vote.

I want the Republicans out. I supported Bill Richardson probably the most. LIked Biden and Dodd. So much for me.

Anyway, this is all very interesting. Having had little invested other than "electability" (given how US politics works), I feel fairly blase. Like whatever.

Hillary can spin all she wants, but the result tonight is a tremendous repudiation of her candidacy. That's what you deserve when you're arrogant enough to run a general election campaign in a primary.

By the way, this author is saying that our politicians respond mostly to the UPPER MIDDLE CLASSES of this country. He says NO MORE FREE LUNCHES for the members of Congress. Complete disclosure on the internet and record of all their expenditures. Who met with them, what they met about, how much did it cost.

Politician Finance Reform with Zero Tolerance.
So you see, for that, Edwards would be the way to go so if there is a media blackout, that is why.

& it's probably also why Congress is disappointing even with more Democrats.

Ah - thankyou matthew - that's cleared up my concerns about her obscene use of money these past weeks.

Think of all the problems right now in Kenya. That's where Obama's dad was from and there is a very very popular Kenyan rap song called "Obama" - he's a hero in Africa already.

Also if the Republicans bring up his admitted youth drug experimentation and Obama is huge with the young, they are not going to care that much nor will they tend to be racist. As for his weak (so far) record re gays and lesbians, I'm sure a little "wink wink nudge nudge" will help that. That's what was said about Kerry's position against gay marriage. Given the two options, Obama is much better than any Republican.

My son is so jazzed. Not sure whether I am yet but I'm not unhappy. All attacks should be hit head-on with hard truths. No one should let the Pukes set the terms and the framing.

JFK was about the same age. If McCain wins in New Hampshire and gets Independents, it has to be considered that McCain is oooooold.

I am well aware of Obama's weakness on LGBT issues. He hired a black homophobic minister to reach out to black Christians, and a white gay minister to make up to the gay community.

What he just did was cementing homosexuality as a "white problem." Most immigrants here in Los Angeles do believe homosexuality to be a whites-only issue.

But you have a point - Obama will still be better on this issue than any Republican.

I do hope for continued strong showings by both Obama and Edwards. I think Richardson is the most qualified, but as Christy says, he is better suited to be a Cabinet member.

Anyway, like NPR said, the approach of community organizing based on locals is something Obama knew from his past experience in Chicago, and something different than what Dean did by bringing in young people from out of state. There are many kinds of experience.

But I also must stress that the Democrats must hold their line, and never capitulate.

It doesn't help the Democratic cause when they cave in on the war funding or ENDA. In fact, speaking of ENDA, when the Pope decides that gays are a threat to world peace, the Dems need to come out SWINGING and condemn it outright.

The real worry for the Democrats is that an Obama or Edwards win increasingly looks like a green light for a Bloomberg entry into the race. Bloomberg is estimated to be willing to spend as much as $1 billion of his own money to get elected. Depending on who the Republicans nominate, it looks to me like a sizeable portion of his vote comes from likely Democratic leaning voters in 2008. Just how much is, of course, impossible to know. Whereas Bush was a CEO-President in name only, a total and utter hype, Bloomberg would be able to legitimately claim that mantle, and level of experience.

My current thought is that Bloomberg has a chance to win, but likely not to successfully govern, if elected. Both parties would have an interest in undoing/descrediting his presidency - especially given the threat he represents to way that Washington currently operates.

WASHINGTON - Evangelical Republicans in Iowa chose one of their own in Mike Huckabee.

The question is whether the former Southern Baptist minister is strong enough to win outside friendly Iowa territory, and go the distance to the nomination.

Values trump electability
In a poll conducted for The Associated Press of voters entering Iowa's caucuses, values and authenticity outranked electability in importance to Huckabee voters. Six in 10 of Huckabee's voters said the most important quality in picking a candidate was someone who shared their values.

A third of Huckabee's supporters said he says what he believes, while fewer than one in 20 said they thought he had the best chance of wining in November.

Faith was a determining factor for many Republican caucus participants.

More than eight in 10 Huckabee supporters said they are born again or evangelical Christians, compared to less than half of Romney's. Nearly two-thirds of Huckabee backers also said it was very important that their candidate share their religious beliefs, compared to about one in five of Romney's.

Nearly half his supporters consider themselves conservative — about the same as Romney's.

McCain in NH: Would Be "Fine" To Keep Troops in Iraq for "A Hundred Years"

The United States military could stay in Iraq for "maybe a hundred years" and that "would be fine with me," John McCain told two hundred or so people at a town hall meeting in Derry, New Hampshire, on Thursday evening. Toward the end of this session, which was being held shortly before the Iowa caucuses were to start, McCain was confronted by Dave Tiffany, who calls himself a "full-time antiwar activist." In a heated exchange, Tiffany told McCain that he had looked at McCain's campaign website and had found no indication of how long McCain was willing to keep U.S. troops in Iraq. Arguing that George W. Bush's escalation of troops has led to a decline in U.S. casualties, McCain noted that the United States still maintains troops in South Korea and Japan. He said he had no objection to U.S. soldiers staying in Iraq for decades, "as long as Americans are not being injured, harmed or killed."

After the event ended, I asked McCain about his "hundred years" comment, and he reaffirmed the remark, excitedly declaring that U.S. troops could be in Iraq for "a thousand years" or "a million years," as far as he was concerned. The key matter, he explained, was whether they were being killed or not: "It's not American presence; it's American casualties." U.S. troops, he continued, are stationed in South Korea, Japan, Europe, Bosnia, and elsewhere as part of a "generally accepted policy of America's multilateralism." There's nothing wrong with Iraq being part of that policy, providing the government in Baghdad does not object.

In other words, McCain does not equate victory in Iraq--which he passionately urges at campaign events--with the removal of U.S. troops from that nation. After McCain told Tiffany that he could see troops remaining in Iraq for a hundred years, a reporter sitting next to me quipped, "There's the general election campaign ad." He meant the Democratic ad: John McCain thinks it would be okay if U.S. troops stayed in Iraq for another hundred years.....

I just gave a little bit of money to Obama and a little bit of money to Edwards...

It will be interesting to see how the polls in New Hampshire shift after seeing what happened in Iowa.

One thing for sure, the balance of power just shifted hugely, it may be enough to break the blackout.

Obama could help that greatly, depending on how blunt he chooses to be.

Anyone seen Chris Matthews? Or did he commit suicide when his man crush ghoullianni went down in FLAMES?

HAHAHA! It has been TOO DAMN LONG since we had a reason to hope.

I can't remember being MORE relieved or comforted in a long long time.

A black man fathered by Africa, a white mother, a muslim name and an ivy league education. Not to mention how freaking easy he is too look at.

I think he is BEAUTIFUL!

Is New Hampshire as white as Iowa is?

I know South Carolina is heavy with black voters, but I don't know jack about New Hampshire.
