Racism and the Evil Elephant in the Room
Today for the first time in my career, I faced racism and the idea of political correctness head-on. I admit that I tend to be slow on the uptake and quite gullible sometimes, but even this astounded me.
Let me tell you what happened today that has left me questioning whether our schools should have boundaries and political correctness and what role a teacher has when a student wants to push at those boundaries.
The whole situation arose due to an assignment which I issued to the class for their final project. This final project needed to include statistics, formulas, research on a topic of their choosing; however, they need to integrate their spreadsheet in Excel with their research paper in Word and then they will tie it all together and give a speech on the last day of class.
As you might assume, I usually toss out a few ideas for the students to chose but I always allow them to decide if there is a subject they prefer instead of my suggestions. I do, however, inform the students that they must get teacher approval before starting this project.
I suppose that information is fairly irrelevant to what happened today.
Irrelevant or not, what matters is that I had a 51 year old adult (male) ask me if he could do his project on "The dangers Muslims present to our world." Or his alternative subject was, "The increase in crime illegal aliens cause our country and the danger they represent."
He then went on to try to convince me that those two topics were informative and that people needed to hear these subjects except...
"Everyone has to be politically correct and hide the real facts out there."
I was flabbergasted, folks! To say the least, I was absolutely stunned!!! I was being asked to allow someone to present a divisive, controversial, argumentative, wounding, and yes--even a politically incorrect speech just to show that I was willing to allow free speech and an education in racism to happen in this classroom.
I never thought it would happen, so I had never planned ahead. (In case you can't tell, I'm a person who likes to plan ahead for emergencies.)
Yet, there I was, having to decide how to handle this. "Bob" in all his infinite wisdom was saying, "OH..I'm sure you just want speeches about dandelions and won't want any controversy or to be politically incorrect." (insert his snark tag)
If you've never encountered this type of situation yourself, I bet you never imagined what your response would be.
What type of speech is appropriate for the classroom? Is it wrong to ask for subjects to be tolerant of all races or religions in the class? What if a student found it offensive? Heck...I found it offensive! However, just because something offends me, as the teacher, is it wrong to prevent a student from presenting a speech against one race or another?
Those are the questions that ran through my mind as I considered my options.
I'm sure, by now, that you're dying to know what I did. So here's the rest of the story.
At first, I confess, I tried to take the easy way out and told him he needed to research statistics and see if they would fit in with the Excel portion of his speech. I also told him that the other students in the class would possibly argue and confront him if he were to give a speech like that. and I told him it might be difficult to use his ideas for the purpose of this assignment. (Yep. I tried to say no by throwing obstacles instead of by taking a stand against hate speech.)
However, as I drove home, a few additional thoughts entered my head. (Yes. One of those miracles--I know!) One of the thoughts was that I felt coerced into allowing hate speech in the classroom. Two, I felt that it was a time when I needed to draw a boundary for my students.
After all, I do not talk politics during class time; I set an example of respect for all ages and races; and I set an example of tolerance. I felt that free speech wasn't so much the question, or even political correctness was the question.
What I believe is that some students may have walked in that room feeling safe, because that's the environment I try to promote, and some would have left feeling ridiculed, beaten, and abused if I allowed a little intimidation to go against the values I've subtly tried to teach.
So let me ask you... what is the line in the sand between polite racism, the evil Elephant in the room, or Free Speech? And do our educational systems become "liberal" because you teach tolerance instead of hate?
Speak up. (While I'm letting you.)

Sparrow, maybe you could have suggested an alternative topic. How about "Why can't Bubba think?"
Here is the protest video against FOX News, called "Sly Fox." Nas' new LP is "Untitled," a revision of the original title, the N word. Today at 2 PM ET ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn.org will hand deliver a petition with 620,000 signatures demanding FOX end its racist attacks against black Americans, including Senator Obama and his wife. They called her "Obama's baby mama," very disrespectful. Their pundit joked about assassination and their O'Reilly hyped his "lynching party."
"FOX poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news," Nas said. "When FOX talks about lynching the woman who may soon be our first lady and then refers to this wife and mother as a 'baby mama,' they are maligning not only the Obamas, but black women and black people across this country," said James Rucker of ColorOfChange.org.

Immigrants ARE a major problem.
And I am talking about those LEGALLY admitted to the US by the criminal W junta to further their agenda at the expense of everyone else in the US.
Does anyone know if BMW still advertises heavily and proudly on O'Reilly and Fox News?
Maybe I am asking a redundant question, because I'm never buying their fascist crap again anyway.

Madness and Shame

You want a scary thought? Imagine a fanatic in the mold of Dick Cheney but without the vice president’s sense of humor.
In her important new book, “The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals,” Jane Mayer of The New Yorker devotes a great deal of space to David Addington, Dick Cheney’s main man and the lead architect of the Bush administration’s legal strategy for the so-called war on terror.
She quotes a colleague as saying of Mr. Addington: “No one stood to his right.” Colin Powell, a veteran of many bruising battles with Mr. Cheney, was reported to have summed up Mr. Addington as follows: “He doesn’t believe in the Constitution.”
Very few voters are aware of Mr. Addington’s existence, much less what he stands for. But he was the legal linchpin of the administration’s Marquis de Sade approach to battling terrorism. In the view of Mr. Addington and his acolytes, anything and everything that the president authorized in the fight against terror — regardless of what the Constitution or Congress or the Geneva Conventions might say — was all right. That included torture, rendition, warrantless wiretapping, the suspension of habeas corpus, you name it.
This is the mind-set that gave us Abu Ghraib, Guantánamo and the C.I.A.’s secret prisons, known as “black sites.”
Ms. Mayer wrote: “The legal doctrine that Addington espoused — that the president, as commander in chief, had the authority to disregard virtually all previously known legal boundaries if national security demanded it — rested on a reading of the Constitution that few legal scholars shared.”

Don't know Ally.
Also, his speech was about 'illegal' aliens. His wife is a legal alien. She does not agree with him--or so she told me.
Thanks sparrow...
The only difference between an illegal alien and a legal alien is that the legals come from countries strategically important to the W junta, both on foreign policy level and on influencing domestic policies in its favor.
There is a reason why Cubans and Koreans get a free pass into the US, while Mexicans don't.
As a result, there is no point in carping about just the illegals, unless you are a Kool-aid drinker and benefit from the "legals" and their US presence.
BYW...what was initially disappointing and upsetting to me about this student...he's a middle-school teacher.
Frankly, I'm more inclined to believe his life is in more danger from those students than it is by some 'Muslim or illegal alien.'
I'm for any change in our immigration policy that would allow us to deport Rupert Murdock and Reverend Moon...
Hey sparrow,
Difficult call. Many schools would allow the presentation just for the sake of debate. In those cases, however, the other students would probably (maybe) be given a heads-up so they know what they are walking into. That way they can come prepared.
You might want to say that no one is allowed to use FOX news as a source, or any other such source.
Cyrano
I agree with you... BUT South Korea has no intention of ever taking Moon back. He's just too valuable for them.

Also, the US citizenship test should've been made much harder to keep the likes of Murdoch out.
Unfortunately, they are making the tests easier for the likes of Murdoch and harder for the honest-to-goodness immigrants.
If you see Kangaroo, I now have two kinds of Obama stickers and some funny Bush stuff that I'll send off on the weekend.
Anybody else see those T Boone Pickens ads about his plan for energy independence?
I'm still ticked off at Pickens for his support of the Sleaze Boat Veterans, but his effort demonstrates that Gore's plan actually could have bipartisan support.
Only people on Big Petroleum's payroll believe that we can drill our way out of this crisis.
He then claimed that attending Netroots Nation was “the same as if he stepped into the Klan gathering”:
O’REILLY: Al Gore now is done. He’s done. Ok. He is not a man of respect, he doesn’t have any judgment. The fact that he went to this thing is the same as if he stepped into the Klan gathering. It’s the same. No difference. None. K, he loses all credibility with me. All credibility.
.... I was AT Netroots Nation and I came away with the impression that the South shall rise again! Slugbug
As Ben Smith at Politico says -
While talk radio and Fox News still thrive, and drive opinion and talking points, the right simply has no equivalent to left-leaning journalistic institutions like Huffington Post and TalkingPointsMemo which -- without concealing their perspective -- report, break news, and serve as hospitable channels for opposition research.
It's telling, as Jonathan notes, that McCain had to essentially insource this function and hire a blogger after it emerged that nobody on the outside was going to do it for him.

Hey Matthew...
I have seen those Pickens ads and they are powerful, I sincerely hope this gets through peoples thick thick noggins.
I too still hold a grudge for his SlickBoating.
Oh, and as for bi-partisan agreement, I had the great displeasure of flippin thru channels the other night, and good ol' Glenn Beck was doing his usual hatchet job on Al Gore for having the audacity to propose saving the world with his pie-in-the-sky plan and saying he had absolutely no way to pay for it.
I really dislike that dirtbag. Didn't F*CKSNews have any more timeslots to fill for ultr-right wing hacks?
Monkey, the deal on the right is that they ridicule, attack, rage - do anything but offer an intellectually honest argument one way or the other.
My take is that hard right has become so comfortable thinking of themselves as virtuous / morally superior to the left, that they are now incapable of responding in anything but hysterical fashion. They have become prisoners of their ultimately authoritarian-leaning ideology
Media Matters dot Org says:
ABC News/Wash. Post withheld results of poll favorable to Obama
Summary: ABC News and The Washington Post issued staggered releases of the results of their latest poll, withholding from their first release results favorable to Sen. Barack Obama, including the finding that 50 percent of registered voters would vote for Obama for president versus 42 percent for Sen. John McCain. The next day, the Post ran an article headlined "Poll Finds Voters Split on Candidates' Iraq-Pullout Positions," which did not mention Obama's 8-point lead over McCain. Later that day, ABC News and the Post issued a second release with additional poll results that stated: "Obama continues to hold most of the advantages in the presidential race."

Barack Obama Speech from Berlin, Germany
SHOCK. Three officers guarding nuke launch codes fell asleep on duty.
The Air Force said Thursday that it plans to punish three officers who fell asleep on July 12 while guarding a classified nuclear launch codes device.
The device contained codes that had been deactivated, but nevertheless their lapse of unconsciousness constituted a 'procedural violation' -- and one which the Air Force wishes to avoid in the wake of Minot Air Force Base's 5th Bomb Wing accidentally flying six warheads over the United States last August. The sleeping officers on July 12 were also from Minot.
"While waiting for permission to bring the device back to base, the three officers with the code component in their possession fell asleep," reported the Air Force Times. "The fourth officer was not present.

Obama Berlin Speech: US Foreign Service Workers Instructed Not To Attend
Although it appears most of Berlin is heading to Obama's speech today, US Foreign Service personnel will be banned from the event. And they are not happy. The U.S. Embassy in Berlin has instructed Foreign Service personnel stationed there not to attend Sen. Barack Obama's public rally today, which the State Department this week labeled a "partisan political activity" prohibited under its regulations for those serving overseas.

Iraqi Teams Banned From Olympics
BAGHDAD — Just two weeks before the start of the Olympics, Iraq was told Thursday it's not welcome in Beijing because of a political feud in Baghdad that angered the games' guardians and exiled a country that arrived to a roaring ovation at the opening ceremony four years ago.
The International Olympic Committee told Iraqi sports officials in a letter that it would uphold its ban imposed in June after the government in Baghdad replaced its national Olympic panel with members not recognized by the IOC.
The IOC had called the move unacceptable government interference.
In Iraq, it also smacked of the lingering sectarian bitterness between the new Shiite power brokers and the Sunnis who were once favored under Saddam Hussein _ whose son, Odai, ran the nation's Olympic committee as a personal fiefdom and was accused of torturing athletes who came up short.
"Clearly we'd very much like to have seen Iraq's athletes in Beijing," said IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies. "We are very disappointed that the athletes have been so ill-served by their own government's actions."

GOP Insider Eviscerates Bush And Party: Just "Phenomenal Arrogance"
There is wide-spread acknowledgment, even within the party itself, that the Republican brand is currently poisonous. Faced with massive losses in November, GOP leadership has green-lighted a save-yourself mentality, allowing its endangered members to go against the party line if it means helping their electoral chances.
But if the situation seems bad on the electoral level, insiders warn that it's even worse when you get down to infrastructure and machinery. Facing an avalanche of losses, the GOP is stuck with an antiquated system of fundraising, a tired leadership, and a president many Americans loathe.
"There is a phenomenal arrogance like a fog that has clouded people's thinking and ability to see what is real," said Nicole Sexton, a longtime Republican fundraiser and former Director of Finance for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. "We have to go down in history as some of the worst messengers. And President Bush has been horrible. Everything he does deems calculated and insincere. The same was true with Bill Clinton but he at least had the ability to seem sincere. With Bush, people are throwing stones and tomatoes at him [and he hasn't changed]."

Guantanamo testimony: U.S. let bin Laden's top bodyguard go

But, inexplicably, the U.S. let the bodyguard go.

McCain cancels trip to oil rig after spill, blames weather
Thursday, workers on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico off the Louisiana coast will see clear skies, mild temperatures in the 80's and 90's, and feel only a slight breeze. However, John McCain's campaign says inclement weather caused the cancellation of his appearance there, aimed at promoting offshore drilling.
Perhaps a more likely cause is the 400,000 plus gallons of oil floating through the Mississippi, spilled yesterday after a barge collided with a tanker at New Orleans. As for inclement weather, at the time McCain would have been taking center-stage on the oil rig, Hurricane Dolly, a Category 2 storm, was making landfall at the Texas-Mexico border about 600 miles away.
John McCain's campaign is placing increasing importance on its emphasis of allowing offshore drilling and drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge as a means to reduce US dependence on foreign oil, and public support has been increasing, finds a recent Wall Street Journal/Washington Post poll.
Yet yesterday, when a barge on the Mississippi river at New Orleans, was 'T-boned' an oil tanker -- snapping the barge in half on impact and causing a 419,000 gallon oil spill -- the GOP candidate became a bit shy of the issue.
http://rawstory.com//news/2008/McCain_cancels_trip_to_oil_rig_0724.html
Well McCain campaign calls its fundraisers "finance events" and that's all he has. & they have started something called "McCain Nation" on their website, copying Obama's internet style for house parties and grass roots work.
Republicans can't do anything original. Their t-shirts, their logos, their music - all borrowed (& lame.)

This is the same guy who lost his OWN BET about John Kerry and now won't pay out even though the money is going to Veterans' care.
Nope. What that guy wants is probably not what he's showing on tv.
Also, if he really gave a crap, he'd have 'fessed up by now about his wrong-doing in 04 but instead he carries it even now--as stated above. He also would have had an environmental president in 2004 but he used his money to make sure one of the worst environmental presidents got back into the W.H.
Nope. The guy isn't going to do what he advertises. He's a liar. And he won't follow through. He's got a pattern of behavior that proves it.
There is no line in the sand. We create what is acceptable or not, based on the content and delivery within the medium.
we can joke about almost anything as long as its done in a tastefull manner. Richard Pryor said things that any other comedian would be vilified for, it was packaged to be acceptable.
If someone wants to write and research the muslim danger to the world, or illegal aliens effect to the culture...by all means go for it. They should research their little hearts out.
Find out where innoculations came from, astronomy, mathematics, modern medical pratices, engineering and construction. These all came from the muslim world and were introduced to Europe in the dark ages.
People should find out one of the most peaceful periods in Jerusalems history was when Saladin Ruled it. All could pray, all could practice religion, as long as you did not disturb the practices of another. If you did, you were executed. Problem solved.
The best method to remove prejudice is to shine light on it, the stronger and bigger the light, the better. In the course of researching terror that muslims pose, your 51 year old male would probably find value the muslim world represents.

The Islamic world IS in the Dark Ages today.
Can't force "enlightenment" against their will, however... it only backfires (as Iraq demonstrates so well).
Just turned on MSNBC while eating my lunch. They showed Obama meeting with the French. Meanwhile, back at home, McCain's spokesman said that Obama is doing the easy part, meeting with foreign dignitaries, and that McCain is doing the "hard work" of going door to door in Ohio.
Gagged, then turned off the tv. Can't stand even fifteen minutes of it any more.
Back to work.
Yeah, and what's up with T. Boone Pickens advocating for alternative energy? I saw the ad too, but he reminds me of a snake oil salesman, maybe he is sincere.
Sparrow,
Just my 2 cents, but it might be a good move to take your situation to management. That way, your rear is covered no matter what. If you tell him to go ahead and he offends someone, then your head might be on the block. If you tell him he can't use that material, your head might be on the block.
I know!! You could make the assignment be about a certain subject, and only that subject, for everyone. You have a right to hone the assignment, right?
Glenn Beck says he is neither right nor left, to disarm people, but anyone with an ounce of brains can see he is well set up to represent the right. Real slick.
Rove Threatened GOP IT Guru If He Does Not 'Take the Fall' for Election Fraud in Ohio, Says Attorney
Letter Sent to Attorney General Mukasey Requesting 'Protection for Mr. Connell and His Family From This Reported Attempt to Intimidate a Witness' After Tip from 'Credible Source'
Karl Rove has threatened a GOP high-tech guru and his wife, if he does not "'take the fall' for election fraud in Ohio," according to a letter sent this morning to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, by Ohio election attorney Cliff Arnebeck.
The email, posted in full below, details threats against Mike Connell of the Republican firm New Media Communications, which describes itself on its website as "a powerhouse in the field of Republican website development and Internet services" and having "played a strategic role in helping the GOP expand its technological supremacy."
Connell was described in a recent interview with the plaintiff's attorneys in Ohio as a "high IQ Forrest Gump" for his appearance "at the scene of every [GOP] crime" from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 to the RNC email system to the installation of the currently-used Congressional computer network firewall.
Connell and his firm are currently employed by the John McCain campaign, as well as the RNC and other Republican and so-called "faith-based" organizations.

Congratulations!
Remember "Eve of Destruction" (if you are old enough)? The lyrics were:"The Eastern world, it is exploding, Violence flaring, bullets loading, You're old enough to kill, but not for voting, You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're toting?" That was back in 1965. The Vietnam war was going on, as well as riots in the cities. The country was divided. It was controversial but the record went to the top of the charts. It was the first song to spell out specifics about the Vietnam War for the general public.
He recorded the song again, and with Mick Fleetwood, Roger McGuinn and my old high school friend Todd Smallwood. I knew him at the time of the first version, in Mitchell, South Dakota! It was released on July 21, on the 43rd anniversary of the original release.
Barry McGuire is now 72. He says, "the stupidity of armed conflict doesn't end. Vietnam, Korea, Desert Storm and now Iraq. How many people are still being murdered, slaughtered, blown to bits? If anything, we're on the Dawn of Destruction." McGuire was converted to Christianity but doesn't care much for organized religion. He follows Christ directly.
