DEAR GOD, EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED! by JeffLieber

I'm stealing Jeff Lieber's diary from Daily Kos because after reading the headlines about Ms. Palin, it's clear to see that she's simply a distraction to take people off the real message.

So send Jeff a comment if you're so inclined...

DEAR GOD, EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED!
by JeffLieber
Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 02:47:11 PM PDT

Yesterday was Thursday, today is FRIDAY!

Last night was dark, today its STILL LIGHT OUT.

Before a few hours ago the day was an even number, specifically 28... now... everything is odd and you can't write a check without having to use an 9 on the date line.

OH, LORD, ITS ALL, SO VERY, COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY... exactly the same.

* JeffLieber's diary :: ::
*

John S. McCain has nominated a distraction as his Vice President.

An anti-choice... pro-creationism... pro-guns... fairly centrist ideas on the rights of gay men and women... has a bunch of kids... is the SNL Church-Lady kind of distraction.

Oh, yes, and she happens to have a vuh-jay-jay, which seems to have everyone in a twitter.

Because without the crevice where the joystick would be, she'd just be the unknown governor from the cold state that goes in that weird little box in the bottom left corner of the map.

Without the long hair and the chest bumps and the elevated estrogen levels WE HERE AT DAILY KOS WOULD NOT BE SO STUPID AS TO GET DRAWN INTO A FIGHT ABOUT WHETHER SHE WAS QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT WHEN THE PATH TO WINNING THE ELECTION HAD BEEN SO CLEARLY LAID OUT LAST NIGHT.

But the record's clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush has been right more than ninety percent of the time? I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.

The truth is, on issue after issue that would make a difference in your lives - on health care and education and the economy - Senator McCain has been anything but independent. He said that our economy has made "great progress" under this President. He said that the fundamentals of the economy are strong. And when one of his chief advisors - the man who wrote his economic plan - was talking about the anxiety Americans are feeling, he said that we were just suffering from a "mental recession," and that we've become, and I quote, "a nation of whiners."

A nation of whiners? Tell that to the proud auto workers at a Michigan plant who, after they found out it was closing, kept showing up every day and working as hard as ever, because they knew there were people who counted on the brakes that they made. Tell that to the military families who shoulder their burdens silently as they watch their loved ones leave for their third or fourth or fifth tour of duty. These are not whiners. They work hard and give back and keep going without complaint. These are the Americans that I know.

Wash, lather, rinse and repeat.

Now, I don't believe that Senator McCain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans. I just think he doesn't know. Why else would he define middle-class as someone making under five million dollars a year? How else could he propose hundreds of billions in tax breaks for big corporations and oil companies but not one penny of tax relief to more than one hundred million Americans? How else could he offer a health care plan that would actually tax people's benefits, or an education plan that would do nothing to help families pay for college, or a plan that would privatize Social Security and gamble your retirement?

It's not because John McCain doesn't care. It's because John McCain doesn't get it.

For two decades, he's subscribed to that old, discredited Republican philosophy - give more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else. In Washington, they call this the Ownership Society, but what it really means is - you're on your own. Out of work? Tough luck. No health care? The market will fix it. Born into poverty? Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps - even if you don't have boots. You're on your own.

Say it in Michigan. Say it in Ohio. Say it in Virginia and Nevada and Pennsylvania.

You don't defeat a terrorist network that operates in eighty countries by occupying Iraq. You don't protect Israel and deter Iran just by talking tough in Washington. You can't truly stand up for Georgia when you've strained our oldest alliances. If John McCain wants to follow George Bush with more tough talk and bad strategy, that is his choice - but it is not the change we need.

We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country. Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe. The Bush-McCain foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of Americans -- Democrats and Republicans - have built, and we are here to restore that legacy.

As Commander-in-Chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm's way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home.

I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and curb Russian aggression. I will build new partnerships to defeat the threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear proliferation; poverty and genocide; climate change and disease. And I will restore our moral standing, so America is once again that last, best hope for all who are called to the cause of freedom, who long for lives of peace, and who yearn for a better future.

These are the policies I will pursue.

And in the weeks ahead, I look forward to debating them with John McCain.

And... we're done.

Now, I know I COULD HIT THE CAPS KEY AND BLATHER ON FOR FIFTY PARAGRAPHS AND NO ONE WILL LISTEN TO ME. It seems inevitable now, that... for the next eight days at least... we are going to follow Karl Rove down the rabbit hole and try and KILL, DESTROY and EVISCERATE this woman, because she has been served up like manna to starving hoards, but please know that EVERY WORD, DIARY AND COMMENT wasted on Sarah WhatsHerFace is energy spent losing the inevitable election that awaits us.

She doesn't help win a "swing" state.

She doesn't win a demographic (and may, in the end, cause more women to vote Obama).

She doesn't even get you into a movie theatre with a ten percent discount.

She is a distraction; there to add "Noun-Verb-Mother-Of-Five" to "Noun-Verb-P.O.W".

She is nothing more and surely, clearly, much, much MUCH less.

A distraction won't work. McCain has just highlighted ALL of his criticisms of Obama by choosing Palin. Let's face it - John McCain could die of old age or become completely demented/alzheimers - and who would be your commander in chief????? Holy Moly!

So, his reasons for not wanting Obama - what are they - inexperience, never been a POW, hasn't got countless houses, I can't think of any others. Um ...... Does Palin have all these things?

Obama's team just looks so much more competent at this point - and surely republicans see that. I've thought so since the start. Bringing in Joe Biden was sheer brilliance.

There are some Americans who wouldn't vote black or green or yellow if their very lives depended on it. Which they do at this time. We don't even need to think about them. We just have to hope that we never have to stand next to one of them in a supermarket checkout queue.

The figures Christy gave about the watchers of Obama's speech speak for themselves. When do pollsters ever go out asking young people what their choices are? Not often. I believe this election is going to spit in the faces of the MSM and the pollsters when the results are such that the Democrats cannot even be cheated out of them.

Sparrow, Joe Biden doesn't need to attack Palin. He can attack McCain every time he says Obama is too inexperienced to be Commander in Chief.

"So, are you telling us that your Vice Presidential candidate is more experienced than Barack Obama?"

woz said:

The legislative investigation centers on Palin's dismissal of Monegan, who says that he was contacted several times by the governor and her husband, Todd Palin, and that they pressured him to fire Wooten, who was locked in a contentious divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly McCann.

"Obviously, there was an issue," says Monegan, who claims that the governor talked to him twice and e-mailed him two or three times about the issue. "And did she want us to do more than discipline him? Yeah, anyone can tell you that.

"No one ever -- not her, not her staff -- has ever said, 'Fire Trooper Wooten,'" adds Monegan. "They all said, 'He's not the sort we'd like to have represent Alaska state troopers.' But the intention was clear."

The choice of the 44-year-old mother of five only two years into her first term running the oil-rich far northwest state, and with virtually no national political experience , was seen as a blatant bid to win over disgruntled supporters of failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

But McCain, who presented Palin to the public at a midday rally here in Dayton, painted her as a talented and determined manager and an anti-corruption campaigner with impeccable conservative credentials.

I went to Denver knowing I had arranged access to the Big Tent for "new media" and that was great (see previous accounts earlier in the week!) I didn't expect to go in the Pepsi Center (and didn't) and even more did not expect to get into Invesco Center the last night. My brother had a ticket but I was geared up to watch on a big screen in a bar or at MSNBC stage.

I got a phone call around noon from Washington Dems and if I headed out to Hyatt Tech Center I might be able to score a ticket! I had to figure out which light rail and it took over an hour to get there but I got my ticket! Then I think that I was in line for at least a couple of hours - it was the longest line I'd ever seen let alone been in. It was lively enough though - Trick or Vote vampires, Obama merch entrepreneurs, people screaming that both parties are the same, some guy dressed as a Pope with a naked boy facsimile on his back and one of those inbred Phelps Family people going nuts into a megaphone that we'd all be going to hell.

My seat was way up in the nosebleed section and the stadium was so vertically inclined that it introduced a kind of vertigo. I got ahold of my brother via cell phone and he was directly across the stadium but we had to stay in our own sections. It took me a long time to get around the upper level of the stadium to even find my section but I could hear Will-I-Am singing his viral video song! Sheryl Crow, Michael McDonald, Stevie Wonder and Al Gore, Dick Durbin, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, surely I'm forgetting someone, and then finally Barack Obama!

After he finished his speech, there were fireworks in the manner of the Chinese Olympics Opening (on a smaller scale but certain more than the Republicans could ever pull off, though I've seen the Rolling Stones do it!) & it was cool to see the podium descend right into the ground, like one of the trick sets of Cirque du Soleil.

Notice on the photos that I was enjoying photographing people going up and down in the stands, the security marksmen way up high, the changing colors of the sky and anyone who had unusual regalia or made me feel especially happy. It was a logjam getting out, with people converging from all directions to try to cross a single bridge to the light rail, and trains packed Tokyo-style.

Overheard in the TSA screening line today:

(White-collar young man behind me on cell phone, excited:) Hi Mom, how are you? Has McCain announced his VP pick yet?

(Silence...long pause. Me, thinking: Yeah, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska...hm, I bet this guy is a Republican?)

Young guy: Oh, wow. Wow. Um, wow.

(Me: Yeah....)

Young guy: Wow, that's a desperation pick. (Long pause.) What are they saying on TV about it? (Dread in his voice.) Really? Are you sure? What channel are you watching??

(Me: Fox by any chance??)

Young guy: Oh, Mom, you need to switch channels, find a different channel and see what they're saying. When Obama picked Biden, all the other channels were discussing the pick, talking about Biden, what he brought to the ticket...all Fox News said was "Ball is in McCain's Court" - "Obama picks VP - now the ball's in McCain's Court". Watch some other channels and then let me know what they say. Yeah. Ok, love you Mom.

(Young guy is sort of dejected.)

Meanwhile, the racist, sexist, older leering Republican base is all excited, this chick has tons of kids and shoots things and is corrupt and screws up everything she manages and looks nice with her lady lumps and ohhhhh yeah - does whatever she's told. Rising star indeed and makes them feel like they're somehow getting some if they vote for her ticket.

Let just call it "The boner factor in American politics".

Woz,

I don't think that works. They're saying McBush has the order right with the 'more experienced one' on top and the less experienced on on the bottom.

Of course these Republican talking heads don't comment on the number of times McCain's been wrong, so hopefully all those people are watching Obama and not turning to the RNC next.

In the meantime, I have a feeling Bill and Hillary will be working harder to get Obama elected, because having someone like Palin be the first woman VP and possibly the first woman Pres. probably won't fit their image of the intelligent woman who were suppose to get that role.

Watching Bill Maher last night, I was amazed that Alaska only has 600,000 people for her to govern. That's smaller than any big city in the U.S.

I personally think that McBush will croak within 6 months if he wins. (Not due to violence. I predict he won't be able to handle the stress of it.)

She may emphasize the age gap more, but it's up to Obama's camp to run their campaign and pretend that his VP choice is a serious contender. (She probably is!)

Investigators Are Looking at Governor About Firing
By MICHAEL LUO
DENVER — In unveiling Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as Senator John McCain’s running mate, the campaign is portraying her as a champion of ethics reform for taking on members of her own party whom she saw as beholden to special interests.

But just a few weeks ago she became the subject of a state ethics investigation.

This month, a bipartisan panel of state legislators appointed an independent investigator to look into whether Ms. Palin had fired a top law enforcement official in her administration because he had failed to dismiss a state trooper who was involved in a divorce with Ms. Palin’s sister.

State Senator Hollis S. French II, a Democrat and former prosecutor who is directing the inquiry and picked the independent investigator, said his sense was that the inquiry would probably not turn up a “smoking gun on the governor” but that it “certainly has the possibility of giving her an ethical black eye.”

Alaska State Senate President Lyda Green (R): “She’s not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president? Look at what she’s done to this state. What would she do to the nation?” (Green is from Palin’s home town of Wasilla.)

Alaska House Speaker John Harris (R): “She’s old enough. She’s a U.S. citizen.”

Alaska Democratic Party Chair Patti Higgins: “In this very competitive election for them to go pick somebody who is … under a cloud of suspicion, who is under investigation for abuse of power. It just sounds like a pretty slow start to me. We need a vice president who can step in if, God forbid, something happened to John McCain. I don’t think she’s someone who is ready for that 3 a.m. phone call.”

Randy Ruedrich, Alaska Republican Party Chair: Not giving interviews.

Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg: “a mixed set of emotions, kind of an odd sense of Alaska nationalism or pride. This is like watching a moon landing or something. It’s just something you don’t expect to see very often. It’s wonderful. It was an emotional thing to see the governor walk out with her family and I say, wow, I work for her.”

McHugh Pierre, Alaska Republican Party Spokesman: “She brings her voice of new energy and change. And she knows Alaska.”

Indicted Alaska Sr. Senator Ted Stevens (R): “it’s a great day for the nation and Alaskans.”

Andrew Halcro, local blogger who ran against Palin for governor: “This shocking choice says more about McCain’s desperation than it does about Palin’s qualifications”.

and my favorite…

Alaska State Representative Mike Doogan (D): “Either Sarah Palin has talents and skills we were not aware of”, or “John McCain fell down and hit his head”. He also called the prospect of Palin potentially needing to take over as President”pretty scary.”

I think Joe Biden should try to make her cry.

Nothing like a crying woman to really disgust the republican base.

And she will cry too, because that is ALL she has. As soon as Biden hits anything of substance she is going to let us all see how beautiful her tears are as she screams 'I have 5 kids!'

Yeah yeah lady. So do I. So did my momma. So did my grandma.

And guess what? Republicans only care about them when they are on the inside.

sparrow Author Profile Page said:

Christy,

I don't think Biden should worry about how to treat her. Just treat her with respect and ask tough questions and keep his distance both verbally and physically.

I predict she will break down on her own. I would wonder how she can answer any questions and still come across as someone who is ready to take that 3am call. Clearly they're looking at her as a no-action VP. You know the figure head. I think the role they have in mind for her is to just travel and greet people.

I doubt that she's going to be functioning in a strong role.

I believe Biden will be integral in an Obama Presidency--much like Cheney is. And frankly, I like a VP who works with the President and who isn't just a figurehead. She will be a figurehead.

monkey said:

It'll be fine so long as Biden doesn't call her "sweetie" or something like that during their debate.

Christy said:

I think shewill break down on her own too, as a distraction when Biden poses a question she can't answer.

I really do not see her as so much a 'figure head' choice as much as I see her as the sacrificial lamb.

They know they are toast, they need someone to blame their defeat on.

If the republicans are known for anything it is for hanging the lone woman out to dry when everything goes bad.

Christy said:

They picked her, because God forbid we wind up blaming mcPOW for his own failures. Excuse me while I crucify this woman for the failures of the ENTIRE republican party.

She is safe to blame. Already under investigation and not a REAL player, not like liarman or stevens or ridge.

They chose a weak woman, on purpose.

sparrow Author Profile Page said:

Christy said:

The more I think about it, the more I think it fits just right.

The republicans are not just facing 'defeat' they are facing an ass whipping of such monumental proportions they could literally be extincted from our body politic come November 4th. Only in the deep south will they be left with anything resembling true power.

And they only have 2 months to find someone to symboliclly blame for ALLL OF IT.

There is no other reason to pick someone ALREADY under abuse of power ethics investigations. That is sooo insane it has to be calculated.

And like I said, she is not one of the REAL players who wish to remain blameless and nameless. She is EXPENDABLE.

And the fact they can 'prove' once and for all what terrible politicians women are, is just a bonus to the We Hate Women Party.

There is no way in hell mcmumbles does not know the REAL numbers. There is no way he does not know he is going down in flames. That the entire party is on the cusp of a historic failure, he has to know that. They all have to know they are running out of time to set someone up to blame for all of it.

Why else would you pick someone as your running mate after ONLY ONE meeting...?

">Something to share (from the other side of the ocean) - Reposted from DailyKosby libero7

Look at this picture: "On the streets or at the stadium, tears of the people", from Repubblica in Italy.

There are a lot of differences between the lady in the picture and me. She is black, I am white. She is American, and is certainly proud to be. I am Italian, at this particular time not much proud to be, thinking for example to the politicians who represent us.

There is another difference: the evening Barack Obama has accepted the nomination of the Democratic Party she was in Denver, along with other 84,000 people screaming, I was at home, and I raised in the middle of the night (at 3 a.m....), without making noise to let sleeping the rest of the family, and I followed the speech on TV. But at least one thing joins us: probably at the same time tears have dropped on our cheeks: tears of joy and emotion, tears without colour and who need no translation.

Before getting to know Obama I had a lot of prejudices on USA, like many Europeans. Yes, I have admired since my teen years the American cinema, American literature, American music, I idolized myths as the Reverend King, the Kennedys, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, but I always felt a certain trouble thinking at the average american man who stuffs himself with hamburgers and Coca-Cola, and when he goes to vote sends twice to the White House a dangerous puppet like George W. Bush.

From the day I heard the Obama’s speech after the primaries in Iowa, everything has changed. I started to follow the primary season, rejoicing and suffering with you, I learned to detail the complex rules on delegates, I placed on the US map unknown places, following the path of Obama’s rallies, I discovered the existence of cities as Missoula, Scranton, Waukesha..., I learned the meaning of words like "hopemongers"; I read on blogs incredible stories and normal stories, with people of all ages, race and education.

Step by step, prejudices are vanished and I begin to consider and share. I am not become a blind optimist, and I understand that Americans are not all like those I learned about on this and on other progressive blogs. But I discovered that if we had different stories and live in different places, basically we have many things in common, and above all a dream, THIS dream. And it brings me close to a teacher from Ohio, to a retired in Florida, to a father from Maryland. Even closer, perhaps, that to my racist neighbour who would like to see all the gypsies in a gas chamber.

So the other night, just like that lady at Invesco Stadium, I moved, and I shared with you the joy of being part of a great movement that supports a great person (and his wonderful family). I wish to take the American citizenship for the time necessary to go and vote, and contribute to Obama’s victory, and after return Italian; God alone knows how we need a real change, the old policies are leading us to a collective ruin; worldwide needs a change, and somewhere it needs to begin. Do not extinguish the dream which is also mine, please give this man the strength to carry it forward.

Unfortunately I came straight home from Denver - I did see my brother in Manitou and then he was at the stadium too but we absolutely could not meet there and had to talk by cell phone. My mom and her new husband had alot of plans for travel etc. and already his health isn't good and the relatives are lurking ($$, threats of nursing home etc.) I am maybe going to have to go back to investigate. Shouldn't she be allowed some happiness even though she is almost 80? Isn't it cool to fall in love at that age? They should have some respect!

Going off to Bumbershoot music festival and we'll register voters again. I think Kayakbiker is with the 55,000 protesters at the RNC.

O.K. Let's just say that perhaps Rovian characters have made a deal with the devil - on both sides. Put this anti-choice pretty female on the ticket to draw in the red-necked and churched rural population. (Laura Bush clone). It is THE RURAL population that won Bush his second term. County by county, vote by vote, they added up.
Remember? We checked it out. SOMEHOW, WE HAVE TO REACH RURAL AMERICA!!!

I have a friend who was considering voting for Obama because she has a REAL problem with McSame's AGE. Well, look who he has left them with one heart beat away? (Does that show that he really gives a rat's @$$ about US, the working class Americans?) Rhetorical question, of course.

Also, things ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM. What if (and I'm just saying IF) a deal was struck between a Rovian type character or characters on one side of the aisle with a Rovian type character or characters on the other side of the aisle to LET McCain HAVE HIS ONE TERM? He'd get to start more wars, take away our social security, make sure alot of baby boomers died from hunger, homelessness, or lack of medical care and Pharma. He could wring out the left over bit of blood and sweat that is left in the ex-middle class, then he hangs it up in 2012? Who would profit from that? The only answer I come up with is the Neocons. Who would be the likely nominee in 2012?
