But an appearance in a documentary-style program on the Fox News Channel watched by three million people last week thrust the man, Andy Martin, and his past into the foreground. The Fox program allowed Mr. Martin to assert falsely and without challenge that Mr. Obama had once trained to overthrow the government.

An examination of legal documents and election filings, and interviews with those from Mr. Martin’s past, revealed a man with a history of scintillating if not always factual claims, who has left a trail of animosity – including anti-Jewish comments -- among political leaders, lawyers and judges in three states over the course of more than 30 years.

A law school graduate, his admission to the Illinois state bar was blocked in the 1970s after a psychiatric finding of "moderately severe character defect manifested by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor and a grandiose character." Though he is not a licensed lawyer, Mr. Martin went on to become a prodigious filer of lawsuits, and he also made various unsuccessful attempts to run for public office in three states, as well as for president at least twice, in 1988 and 2000. Based in Chicago, he now identifies himself as an author and writer who focuses on his anti-Obama Web site and press releases.

Aimzz.. My mom was just saying yesterday how she had to deal with that faked bible verse AND the faked birth certificate BS too when one of her friends started in on it. Again.

Me and her got into it a while back about her forwarding emails that had Mexican jokes in them along with anti-liberal BS... Finally I just blew up at her and a few others and it stopped. But I told her at the time, do you realize that you are sending me stuff so full of fear mongering and lies it is not even based on REALITY...? I told her flat out to NEVER forward me an email again. Any email.

Anyways, when she started telling me about her friend forwarding her these Obama emails and saying this stuff about his birth certificate and on and on... I just grinned at her real big and I told her, "do you see now why I blew up at you when you would forward me stuff from them? They are stupid and fearful people forwarding things that are blatant lies."

She really seemed surprised that she could not find that bible verse. I have to admit I laughed at her when she was telling me about it. Welcome to the party Mommy!

(Hmmm...tax payer money spent to promote Sarah?!! Why...what a maverick!)

This contract was the only time the Palin administration hired an outside consultant to do set up media interviews--a function normally performed by government employees.


The PR expert, Marcia Brier, positioned Palin as the force behind a proposed 1,700-mile pipeline that would deliver natural gas from the North Slope of Alaska to 48 states. One pitch:


The announcement of the winning bidder for a new Alaskan pipeline is a major blow to Exxon Mobil, BP, and ConocoPhillips, the three oil companies operating in Alasks . . .These companies have blocked construction of a new pipeline for decades . . .But now, the new governor of Alaska has devised a way to circumvent Big Oil's delaying tactics.

Another pitch:

Even Alaska's upstart governor, who has been key in pushing through the pipeline project that oil companies detest, depends on these very companies for her family income. Her husband, Todd, works for BP as a field worker.

OMG..this is laughable if you aren't already crying! "In reality, she was MIA at the state legislature, enough so that some House and Senate members started wearing "Where's Sarah?" bottons.

Great header, Christy. I hope you've sent it out far and wide. I was waiting for the dentist early the other morning (the doors weren't open) when a man about my age started going on about how dangerous muslims are. Actually, more than that - he was speaking like nothing would help Australia but to reinstall the White Australia Policy.

After asking him how many muslims he'd sat next to on a bus or spoken to in passing he said, "None." After naming several prominent and intelligent muslims from television and after highlighting some of the important considerations within Islam whilst cutting him at every hateful sentence-opening, all I could think was, "Ok, what would Christy say now?" A third person turned up. A man. He stood next to me. Opposite the muslim, black hater. The bigot is married to a Chinese woman. He seems to think that this gives him the authority on which to hate.

Republicans on their websites (and signs) afraid to admit they're Republicans. Also, amazing considering you'd think those 'proud Republicans' might want to brag about their accomplishment in the 110th Congress. It's not every Congress that breaks the record of filibusters and commits hidden holds. So proud as they were to f*** it up for us, they sure are suddenly finding it difficult to admit that they're Republicans and that they followed this administrations orders and that they really f***** things over for us. (It was sure easier for them when they could point the finger at the Dems and could pretend to care about gas prices via staged theatre. But when push came to shove, they filibustered and had their hidden holds and the American people got hurt by those evil Repubs. No wonder they can't admit they're a Republican.)

Obama's blog and many of the canvassing & related stories at DKos have such a positive flavor. I also took a stroll over to McCain's blog, as I often feel like doing, since I used to be a moderator on Kerry's blog and got a sense of moderation and trolls. It looks to me like McCain's has degenerated. People are name calling and accusatory and there are very few references to things like making calls. It is amazing.

I read through McCain's new stump speech and they have shortened the sentences and simpllified the words. It's a lot of simple active declarative statements, large to read off the teleprompter. I would assume that elements of it will appear at the debates. Meanwhile, Obama rolled out his new economic program with practical steps to help the middle class. What the McCain campaign is telling people is that those who are taxed have to pay for those who don't even pay taxes at all, and that those in the highest bracket are being taxed too much.

I tell you - Republicans believe in a dog eat dog world. Over at Free Republic, people were incensed that McCain would have anything to do with the Paulsen plan, let alone that he would propose helping those with mortgage problems in any way. That is one reason he is losing some support of people like Christopher Hitchens and William F. Buckley Jr. It's not just because the McCain/Palin campaign has been inciting anger and taunts, which they appear to have been told to tone down.

I thought Biden and the Clintons did great work in the states they've been going to, and I'm looking forward to the debate. We need to push and push and push for three more weeks. I wish I could get off work and go to Nevada or Colorado to help. I want to buy some cell phone minutes for Florida.

As has been pointed out, the majority of republicans have supported this administration's shredding of the American constitution and theft from American taxpayers. There is a point though, when all but the hardest core of them all - the Cheneys and Roves and Busheviks - can no longer stomach the fascism and KKK behaviour.

I believe that many republicans, rather than feel compelled to vote for Obama whilst not being able to vote for McCain/Palin, will simply stay at home come election day.

This election is a real chance for Americans to stress over and over how they feel about the criminality of the administration of the last 8 years by not just electing Obama/Biden - but by an avalanche of demand for change. Leave no doubt that those hate-spewers should tremble in their boots for having threatened to behead the *muslim* president.

Ayers has been dragged into this campaign because there is a deep frustration on the right with Obama's enthusiasm for shutting down the culture wars of the 1960s.

Precisely because Obama is not a Baby Boomer, he carries none of that generation's scars. Most Americans (including most Boomers) are weary of living in the past and reprising the 1960s every four years.

... Whenever this gets raised, the implication is that there is something wrong with being an Arab-American or a Muslim. And the media is complicit here, too.

We've all been too quick to accept the idea that calling someone Muslim is a slur.

I feel like I am stating the obvious here, but apparently it needs to be said: There is a difference between radical Muslims who support jihad against America and Muslims who want to practice their religion freely and have normal lives like anyone else.

There are more than 1.2 million Arab-Americans and about 7 million Muslim-Americans, former Cabinet secretaries, members of Congress, successful business people, normal average Americans from all walks of life.

These are the people being maligned here, and we can only imagine how this conversation plays in the Muslim world. We can't tolerate this ignorance -- not in the media, not on the campaign trail.

Of course, he's not an Arab. Of course, he's not a Muslim. But honestly, it shouldn't matter.

The question is not "who is Obama?"
The question is: who are we?

I don't understand the muslim/Arab rubbish at all. But I did notice, when McCain took the microphone from that woman, that McCain did NOT state that Obama is an AMERICAN. He just said he's a good person; not a good American. Can't Muslims be good people? Or arabs? The response was not respectful - it was a crap response to the most offensive statement from one of his supporters, that she can't trust Obama [because] he's an arab. Isn't that what America is about - including all?

Who cares where Obama's roots are? They've given him the strength to reach for the stars and fight with us all. And yes, sometimes I don't like some of the things that he says but I'm hoping that he's just saying those things till after the election when they can all be clarified. From earlier threads about bottom up or top down - real change has never happened without the ground swell of the populous. It's impossible unless it begins at the bottom and escalates upward and outward.

Whoever heard of a revolution coming about through the actions of the wealthiest toffs among us? I've been too busy sightseeing around South Korea and blogging on my own (and Christy's) blogs to check in here lately, but I am still doing okay in Seoul. At least as well as I can do under a government that is determined to install McCain as your next President at any cost, and also dictate primitive Third World morality for California (home to hundreds of thousands of South Korean nationals).

Remember that the Lee Myung-bak government is making its maximum use of the presence of its US agent, the Unification Church, to ensure that a very well-qualified black man will NOT be the next President of the United States. Remember that it was the South Korean slush funds that brought about the whole lie about Obama being a Muslim extremist.

I can tell you this, however. The people of South Korea gave Lee a landslide victory, and his fascist party a clear legislative majority, because Lee had the best business background, and the economy was supposedly tanking under the previous ten years of leftist rule. But now, they realize that they've been fooled by the corporate media propaganda machine; under Lee, it's only getting worse. Lee has also been busy at work destroying the very impressive democratic gains made by South Korea in the past twenty years. If the leftists can wake up and field a good leader, they WILL wipe out the fascists once and for all.

The vast majority of South Koreans support Obama. They want him to castrate their own illegitimate right-wing government, and help build lasting peace on the entire Korean peninsula.

I will also say that Lee has been so faithful in following the Reagan-Bush program of tax cuts for the rich and smearing of political opponents, that I predict that in 30 years, South Korea will look as sorry as the US of today. The one thing that gives me hope is that South Korea has a long tradition of democratic struggles. Decades of military fascism couldn't do the people in, and Lee won't be able to top that either. And contrary to what Lee says about leftists being North Korean sheeps, neither will the North Korean Communists, should they somehow try to control South Korea.
